Steering Balljoint question
« on: 12 March 2007, 12:16 »
After unbolting these the weekend I am unable to do them up again.  I can do them up so far and then the nut just keeps turning the thread.  In the past on other cars I have noticed that the thread goes from underneath allowing you to apply pressure with a jack to do up the nut however with the golf the thread comes from the top and I've been unable to apply enough pressure to do this nut up.

Any tips on how to do this?  What way have you managed to keep the pressure on the joint in order to secure it?

clean both threads of so they are really nice and there is no resistance when screwing them up, then clean the internal tapers and the external tapers and make sure you dont get anything on them that could make them slip. start the nut up the thread then hit the top of the joint with a hammer to get a good contact between the 2 surfaces of the tapers, screw the nut up and clamp the threaded part with some mole graps once it appears behind the nut.

Cheers for that.  I also found another way tonight, get a mate to stand on the top of the joint.  Assuming they are not a fether weight it works a treat.
