GTI Exhaust > 1.6 Driver.
« on: 09 March 2007, 19:13 »
Hey, got a Gti exhaust to go on my driver, will it go straight on, are the I.D of each section the same? or will I need some sort of adapter? have the front silencer back.

Also, anybody got any tips on the fitting?

Thanks

Rich

well i was told that a 8v gti manifold would go straight on. so i think you will need to get a gti manifold as well.

It wont fit straight on, the 1.6 system is smaller than the GTI system. You have several options:
1. fit 1.8 carb downpipe, this will mate to the original manifold, and has a bigger end which fits the gti front silencer
2. fit GTI manifold & downpipe
3. get an adaptor made up between your existing downpipe & the front silencer

Option 2 will give you the best performance, but is also the most tricky/risky.  You may end up shearing off one of the manifold studs, I did this on my driver and I had to drill it out & re-tap.

u say option 2 is the best performance, but what risks are envolved? is it just the bolts sheering? or are there other risks?

If a bolt shears, then a proper fix would be neccasary for a decent seal. Depending on which bolt shears and where, ie, in the head or the manifold to exhaust connection, access is very limited and head removal may be the only option. If you are going to go down this route, take the car off the road for a day or two before doing the job and completely soak the bolts and studs in penetrating oil. Keep applying the oil every few hours and let the oil do its job. BUT, there are no guarrantees.

shearing a bolt in the head is the worst case scenario, if that happens its head off time.

I forgot to add that to get the new downpipe in you'll have to either take the head off, pull the engine out or drop the subframe!
