ARGH!! Update please help my lowered dilemma!
« on: 09 March 2007, 15:18 »
Well, today fingers crossed, my gti will be coming home from the garage today.
When I bought it, the chap who sold it to me said it had been lowered. looking at some piccies it looks like it has been, but how can I tell if it has, and if so how can I tell how much to tell the insurance company?

I've never lowered a car or been interested in doing it, but I know if the fuzz stop me, they won't believe I havent done it myself, and if i tell the insurance, will they be interested in how its done, or by how much?
I don't really know much about it.
Thanks

There is a measurement around here somewhere, but cant remember it!

Basically if your tyres are close to the arches its been lowered. Standard there is about 50mm gap.

Try having a look at the suspension under the wheel arch, if its had full suspension i.e koni it'll have different shocks and springs, depending on the make they might be yellow, standard would be black.....

or just look at the springs, if they look newer than the rest of the suspension chances are it has been lowered

tell the insurance company -40mm springs lol, easy thing to do

look around at a couple of other mark 3s...

Especially an old white 92 golf mk3 cl..which no alloys...

Unlikely to be lowered...compare your car to it

oh dear, sory for the bump, but im in a desperate situation

just rang the insurance company to find out about it being lowered.
they said if its les that 5cm its an extra £90, its its more than 5cm they wont insure us!! As its classed as "drag-racing car"
honestly, an 8v gti?!!!
Heres the problem.. its my g/f 21st tomorrow and I'm taking her away (she doesnt know) but I need to know whether im insured or not.
in other words I need to know how much tis been lowered by (if at all)
I just measured the gap : Between the top of the types (standard wheels and standard tyres) and the bottom of the plastic part of the wheel arch (trim part) i make it between 5cm and 5.5cm (front and back exactly the same) but its on a hill, facing up.. does that make a difference?
im really worried, i dont want to have invalid insurance for this weekend..
PLEASE help!!
Thanks, I appreciate people looking!

hi mate, yes it does make a difference if its on a hill and by sounds of it your car is lowered about 40mm if there is still about 5cm of space. you could always contact the previous owner if all else fails. You may need to look at another insurance company as some wont insure 'modified' cars.

Cheers
Rich

ok thanks for that.
Can I take from that then that standard gap is around 90mm?
I'll have to take it to the garage this morning, and if it is 40mm, then atleast they'll insure us, even if it is an extra £90
