MK3 16V Steering?
« on: 09 March 2007, 09:57 »
Just srated to get a strange clicking noise from the steering when turning at low speeds, you can feel it through the steering  wheel but only once when turning left or right and only when doing something like, turning in a car park.  Can't feel anything when at speed...

I have just changed the steering belt as I thought it might be this but its still there?  Any ideas? Could the steering rack be on the way out?

The car is a 96 GTI 16V and its done 80K.

Several things, yes could be the rack or maybe a loose mounting bolt.
There's also track rod ends or top mounts. (top of shocks)

Thanks, I will have a look over weekend - I hoping is just a loose bolt!!  Out of interest, how difficult is it to change the rubber bushes on the track rods? Or is in a garage job?

If its the track rod ends - they are balljoints so not hard to do as long as you soak the bolts and collar where its screwed onto the rod wi wd40 and leave for 15 mins to soak in then use a balljoint splitter (screw-type) to separate them, mark the rod where it screws into the old one and screw the new ones that far up and put the pin through then bolt it up.

You'll have to get the tracking done but thats cheap.

Could also be the ARB bushes or the lower arm bushes. I need all mine done and mine does that plus it klonks when turning into my driveway as I cross the kerb wi the wheel on lock.

Or you could have a very loose wheel bearing or roadwheel. Im done lol

Just making sure you've checked the fluid level and bled it?
