Brake Upgrade?

Hi,

Just had my 1.8T serviced, my front pads and discs need replacing. Quoted £200 for 3rd party new front discs, pads and fitting. Seen a 312mm TT upgrade kit floating around on Egay for about £225. Did a bit of research and can't seem to find out whether they would fit the original Montreal 1 alloys I have. Also if i did get these how much I am looking at to get these fitted? Car is a completely bog standard 1998 AUG at the moment.

Any tips/info appreciated.

what size are your Montreals? if they are 16's then it will perfectly.  I've got the montreal 2's and the brake upgrade.

Is the ebay member 'golfturbo'?  If so then i recommend him as I've bought the kit from him.

I paid my local mechanic £20 to fit them for me.

That kit's the cheapest you'll find!  Just sell the calipers on when you get it!

I've recently bought (yet to fit) a 2nd hand set of the 312mm's.  I've been told by Golf Turbo & other dealers that they fit under the 16" Monty 2's (not sure about the Monty 1's, though) - I probably won't be finding out for sure for a while now, as I've got the 18" Anni's back on my car, now.

Ps  What did you mean by 'other' 312mm upgrades?

Thanks Ivor. By other upgrades I meant are there any aftermarket non VAG Pads, discs and calis only (312mm), or am I looking at the expensive kits by Brembo, Tarox or Neuspeed etc?

Well, the beauty of the 312 setup, is that you can bolt the carriers, discs & pads straight on using your existing calipers, thus saving the need to mess about bleeding the brakes/changing the brake fluid etc.

I've done a few track days, & have always been a firm believer in uprating my pads but running cheapo discs (I find that the drilled and/or grooved discs only wear the pads out quicker!).  I'd go for likes of Ferodo DS2500's/Mintex/Pagid pads.

The bigger brake kits (including the R32 setup) will cost you a fortune & also the extra forementioned hassle.

Yep - Either keep the calipers as spares or sell them on ebay/here/ukmkiv's.net etc.

He won't split the set, as many have asked before, LOL!!

Yes - I got a very good price.....  FREE, as I'll be fitting it myself!!!   

£65 + VAT seems a lot to me - I'm sure I've read somewhere that some body paid only £20.

If I was you, I'd go down to a local place on a Sat, & see if the Saturday boys will sort you out.
