Fuel consumption on a 1.8t

i had a mk4 1.8t a few years back and fuel consumption was bad on it i have just got another and yet again it aint v good i just sold my 2001 bmw 325i i was putting in £20 a week in and doing between 110 and 120 miles on that with a fair bit of fast driving yet im getting about 90 miles to £20 on my golf and iv been driving it like an old man! is this average and does the consumtion get better with chipped versions? any help would be great thanks in advance dunkz

It can depend a lot on when you are changing gears and what types of journey you are doing.  For example if you are cruising at 30 in 3rd gear you won't see high MPG.  I myself get around 34 mpg in everyday driving including a bit of motorway crusing but I have had 40 mpg off a long motorway journey.  A lot will really depend on your right foot even if you think you are driving like an old man cause your speed ain't high it may be the way you get to that speed.  There is also the possiblity of having problems, and no it won't improve it by chipping it, chipping your car gives you more power which leads to harsher acceleration which leads to lower MPG.  90 miles off £20 is wrong but why not use the cars on board computer to see what MPG you are really getting rather than guessing?

and what gear should u normally be in when doing 30 and 40? just wonder becuz my mpg is crap

well it depends in general I find moving up to a max of 2500/3000 revs and changing keeps my mpg decent and is ok for the most, driving round town it's rare I need to pull faster than this.  at 30 I tend to cruise in 4th gear anything 35 and above I use 5th gear.

I agree with Turbobeasts gear changes giving higher mpg numbers, on a conservative drive for half an hour i normally get around 37mpg with ease and its not uncommon that ive hit 40mpg although this isnt common.

I installed a boost gauge in january and this has helped my petrol consumption greatly as im more aware of hitting boost and when the engine is under load, althought this isnt why i fitted it.

i have a 1.8t v reg 86k  and ive had it for about 3 months, i have never seen my car go anywhere near 40mpg.  for £20 i get 100 miles and a full tank is just over 200?  ive tryed slow driving, motorway, in town, still cant get it good???

thanks for all your info guys i fitted my recirc dump valve the other day and it seems to go better so iv been sticking my foot down a bit and it seems to be better than taking it easy ! i found this on my last golf any one else found this ?

I get 33mpg (average), Out of a full tank i get on average 380 miles.

Fitting a superchip will return slightly better MPG, with much better performance the main reason being is that you gear changes are less,would definitely reccommend chipping your car/Rev remap, you wont look back.I have a 1.8 T @190 HP, and would not consider driving a turbo petrol/diesel car again without a superchip or re map.I regularly return 37-43 mpg at 50 mph in fifth gear on a flat road.

how the f**k can i only get 200 miles on a full tank £40 ??
