get a tdi! mine is chipped to 116bhp, 1bhp more than the 8v and trust me..ive never had a problem with any of the small cars..

I even catch up with bigger cars because of the whole wolf in sheeps clothing idea..they dont floor it, cause they dont expect a 10 year old car that sounds like a taxi to do anything

I dont do "playing" on the roads.

But i did have some idiot in a 1.4SRi behaving like a tool - my 8v GTi had no problem with that at all.

My 8v really is quicker than i give it credit for really.

Personally, even though I put stuff in my other post - I reckon there is something wrong with the car that lost to the corsa

I totally agree. I have an 8v (for sale if you're interested) and although I'm a little too old to race  I do play from time to time against my Nephews Pug 1.9 GTi and there's not much much in it. I love 205 Gti's but the Golf is just so much more refined. That theory sticks with me now also, I could have had any car in hot hatch (Megane F26, ST, Clio 197 Type R) but I've bought a GTI ED30 because of it's build quality + Speed!

Anyway, enough of my new car, the 8V is still a great car, not the quickest, but quick enough, comfortable and 350 miles from a tank of Fuel.

i had a crash (no i was not racing) and i had to jig the car and resprayed it..replaced the engine with same 8v (90k miles), replaced gearbox (used), new clutch. could the fact that i crashed effected my cars performance? if so how?

crabbing or misalignment can scrub off speed and add to the rolling resistance.

From the top of a known incline , drop into neutral from say 50mph, check what speed it slows to at a specific marker like a sign or lamp post, by itself  and do the same check with a mates car to see if yours is slowing too much compared to the other car.

I found my old brakes were dragging as my car would slow to 40mph from 60 by the time it had rolled from the top of a local incline to the next speed limit sign, my dad in laws car was still doing 50 at that marker and they are roughly the same size and weight.

crabbing can cause a lot of speed to sheer off, although your used gearbox could also be taking some away, add all the little things together and you may have a big problem.

Do you know how many miles the gearbox had covered and does it go into gear ok?

Could loose a bit of power through the gearbox.

Yea same hear about the gear box, i don't know much about gear boxes and what fits what etc but is there any way you could of had the wrong box fitted ?
