big wheels will not help acceleration at all put the 15s back on will pull a lot better unless you had a tiny side wall on 17s so you had the same rolling radius as the 15s

it's not the rolling radius that causes worse acceleration as it would have to be near the same even with 205/40/17's. the problem is unsprung weight. a 17" alloy and tyre weigh a hell of a lot more than a 15" so it takes more power to move it as quickly.

pah... your all just crap

granted the 8v is no vrs beater, but it can still provide enough grunt to eat a large range of cars if u get the launch and the gear changes right, especially if your only 22 and cant afford the insurance on a vr6!

and besides, u shouldnt be racing on public roads... its naughty

Not meaning to take the pee/offend, but it could just be the driving style/technique... you could try driving each others cars? I tried to do a timed run in my 16v before and first couple runs I was getting 0-60mph in around 10secs, which is utter pants, more practice and its about 8secs.

Looking at the figures alone, the mk3 8v 115bhp should beat the corsa 1.2 16v 88bhp hands down, and should be 3secs faster to 60. Similar weights and torque.

Gotta go with what someone posted earlier, you have to remember that your car is about 12 years old while your mates is 1 year old. Engineering has moved on quite a bit in that time. My brother was busy telling me how much quicker his 3 year old A3 TDI was than my 98 GTI - the very car he has had remapped so surprise surprise there. Best bit was the turbo blew up the other week

You also gotta think when you were "racing" your mate, he might have been thrashing the b******s of his car as well. If he was in front then he had a head start which isnt going to be easy to recover from.

I would have thought that the Golf is a good bit heavier that the corsa as well. My missus had a polo and that weighed an effing ton, nightmare to steer as it didnt have power steering. Power to weight ratio for both cars might then tip in the corsa's favour.

I have always found corsa's (and nova's) with 1.2 engines to be quite nippy up to about 50MPH then they start to lose it but can still do 70-90 before they struggle.

Personally dont have any complaints about my Mk3, only thing that has left me for dead was a scooby - so no surprise there.

If you want something nutty quick get a scooby or a bike. Brand new quick bikes that cost less than 9 grand will leave ferrari's (200K plus) standing so your 12 year old golf being beaten by a corsa aint that bad.

hmmm VR6 are the best words that go along with VW. Or even R32 turboed engine in a golf.

Definately glad I went for the 16v!! Eats saxos and fiesta zetec or STs for breakfast

Feck knows why but my 8v seems to rip the piss out of those cars also.  I had a little blast against my mate in his newer standard 8v and mine left him trailing behind. He swaers blind he was giving it his all but just couldnt keep up!! He was seriously peesed off

I also had a chav in a way over the top corsa the other morning reving his car grinning at me at the lights . When the lights changed the twit floored it so i thought feck it im going to have a go. It didnt take me long to catch the looser up and pass him

The tit stayed about 5 car leanths from my bumper after that

I dont normaly go in for the traffic light grand prix thing but this tit had been driving right up my jacksy for the last two miles

I had a corsa twinport 1.2 rent a car this was brand new and it could not pull the skin off a rice pudding. I cant see how a 1.2 corsa can beat a 8v GTI especially on top end i know the mk3 8v was not the fastest car in the world but a 1.2 corsa come on. He would not of seen me for dust in my old 8v mk2. Are you sure its not broken mate, try having it dynoed, oh and dont race on the street its bad....
