Why de-badge?????
« on: 28 February 2007, 14:34 »
I have a question for the panel (thats you lot!) Why do so many people de-badge their front grille? Are you ashamed of your vw?! And why convert to single headlamps? The twin headlamps are one of the defining features of the mk2. Who agrees/disagrees?

Dont get me wrong . . . Im not knocking anyone here! I'm all for being individual, each to their own n all! but I thought it would make an interesting debate . . .

Original front ends all the way!

I'm fully with you on this my man, the other's will say they de-badge to make it look smoother and more aggresive, or to be individual (even though they all do it like sheep!). I'd say it looks to other people like you're ashamed of the marque you're driving, and with some of the Max-Power crew it is sometimes hard to tell what the original car was without badges due to all the bodykit's (that's mainly Saxo's etc, not Golf's on here before everyone starts!)

As for the single headlight's and no red piping I don't get this either, to start off with the single headlight grill was only fitted to non-GTI's, and everyone know's the red piping was the hallmark of the GTI. I don't get it why people would want there GTI to look like a 1.3 driver (grill wise)!!!

Confused as you mate, but it's a design classic, why ruin it?

i agree - oem is much better these days.

too many people have modded their mk2's that oem is now the rarer option.

Each to there own.........

Yeah I'm in agreement too here, but I still had to get a single light grille and see if it looked better in the flesh - nope. Then I tried painting the piping red - nope. So now I'm back to the quad lamp grille

simply because I like it and at the end of the day its all down to personal preference. I have 3 grill choices for when my car goes back on the road but am not sure what I will go with at the time but what ever choice it is its because its the one I want.

I am not trying to De-GTI my car by removing the red outline and opting for a plain black single light grill, merely opting for what I prefer.

I'm all for the oem look however I wanted to declutter the front end of my car. I stuck with a badged grille but went for single lights. I was trying to get the number of different colours down to a minimum.
I still have the original grille tucked away for when I change my mind though ;)

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

1. Stealth. Lulling people into a false sense of security and then leaving them wondering what hit them.

2. Cleaning up the lines of the car. Decluttering the grill/boot.

3. Some cars have had that much work done to them that the owners remove the badge so it is more about their creation than the original manufacturer's ideas. This rule usually applies to people who spend too much time wanking over max power magazines.

My ideas anyway

my opinion for what its worth...i love the look of the smooth simple debadged and single headlight front ends but equally love the retro liook of a standard golf. however 50 years from now i bet our grandkids are desperatly trying to find the original stuff
