mk3: 215/40/17's + 60mm springs???
« on: 27 February 2007, 18:08 »
ive had a little search and not come up with a lot.

so.... should i expect any rubbing and / or major problems with a 60mm drop over 215/40/17's?

i had to mod my back arches with 205 40 17 tyres a little so will probably need a fair amount if you lower it 60mm.

I've got those wheels/tyres and they are fine on standard springs. But when I have a total load in the back - 2 adults and a boot full I did get rubbing from the top leading edge of the bumper.

I have heard others on here say they have the same and a 60mm drop and they had no problems!
maybe they have different offsets i dunno.

fair one.... my wheels are 8.5" wide, so the tyres are quite stretched, and its currently lowered 40mm and ive had 2 people in the back with a load of football kit with no scrubbing problems, but the front sits too high so want it lower, but been advised against mixing spring brands.

When mine rubbed it was on 8" wide wheels. So the tyres were fairly well stretched.

Mase tell us how you go on, I am fancying some 8-8.5" wide alloys so would like to see how you go on with dropping your car.

I have only been put off as I was told that 8.5" would sit outside the arch so arched would need rolling - £Â£Ã‚£'s which I dont want to spend

If the drop becomes a problem you could fit 205 tyres to stretch that rubber even more, and / or have the inside of the wheel arches trimmed (not as expensive as rolling) to give more clearance.

D-day is march 20th, im letting the guys at the phirm (www.thephirm.co.uk) sort it out, might need the arches rolling, but that can be delt with when the time comes.

but patch, my 8.5" wheels hardly stick out from the arches at all, ill be taking a loads of pics when its done, but as you said, 205's are always an option, and are a few quid cheaper than the 215's, so will have to see

do it mate.... phat wheels are the way forward, if i was starting fresh id go for the 205 tyres, but as this already had 215's on, and i only needed 2 tyres when i bought some, i stuck with that... give a nicely stretched look.

i can take a couple of pics now if you wanna see the clearence and the tyres.  :nerd:
