Newbie TDi Queries..

Already posted in the newbie section, but a few queries that hopefully some kind soul will set straight for me...

1. Engine Oil - Is Castrol Magnatec GTD  10W40 Ok for a 90bhp TDi 1997 vintage ?   I know about VW quantum oils, but i can get Castrol from my local Makro and i've used and trusted Castrol for years.

2. Headlamps - i'm assuming they are single units with H4 bulbs (its a CL spec ) - what have people upgraded to, Osram Silverstars ?  or has anyone tried a cheap HID kit (i've previously put HID kits in cars and found them pretty good, but maybe not worth the expense on a low price car)

3. Injector / Pump / Turbo life - any ideas what the life expectancy is - its currently on 100k so i assume the injectors will have been changed by now !

answers:

1) Castrol GTD Magnatex is what is use in my mk3 TD
2) Osram bulbs in my mk3
3) My previous mk3 had over 170k and ran fine with the original injectors - local garage recommends using redex before any mot's.

Thanks for the quick reply - i'll be using a few shots of Redex initially, and Shell Diesel only, so hopefully that will clean out any deposits and improve the spray pattern.


Any idea what is a realistic consumption figure based on a weekly regime of  town driving and the odd 30 miles motorway jaunt ?

My mk3 gti has H1 bulbs fitted mate,. I would suppose the diseasel tdi is the same.

They are single tungsten halogen wi one flat spade at the bottom as the high beams are seperate on the gti.

Dunno if yours has the two-beam lights wi the round lenses in the inner 2 like mine (and square outside dips) or the all-in-ones fitted to CL's etc

All road legal now, after finally getting the insurance cover note (and hence road tax) today

Changed all the filters and engine oil the other night.

Given her a bit of a wash n wax today (well wash, clay bar, scratch x, 3 coats of Meguiars stage 2 polish, and a coat of Zymol Concours wax 

Got about 3 kilos of mud out of each wheelarch  :embarassed:

new glovebox handle to go on tomorrow, and change the headlight bulbs.

Picked up some H4s in Halfords, their super extreme range or summat - buy one, get one free so they'll do for now
