Newbie takes the plunge!
« on: 26 February 2007, 23:57 »

Well having read the posts seen the film(s) (Top Gear etc)   bought the T shirt...I jumped in with both feet this PM and bought a second hand GTI from my local dealer. Have probably paid too much and not searched long and hard enough but after a  2 hr test drive...just had to have it-thank goodness for impulse!:

June 2005-Laser Blue Metallic (Seemed a nice colour...even though I was looking for red!)

DSG
Leather
18in Monzas
Sat Nav
CD autochanger in armrest
MFSW
Sunroof
Parking sensors
Cruise

29k miles  £18960 ex  road tax including Life shine thrown in.

No doubt someone will tell me I paid too much but they would not discount  any more!

Anyway -not sure if I have highline or midline computer-how do I tell-what;s the difference?
Also it has  been fitted for a mobile-it has a cradle thingy but looks as if something should fit inside it before it takes a phone...don't think it was OEM...is it easy to get a proper cradle inserted for my Nokia?? (my son has wired his stereo /amps etc in his car so he can do this for me  I'm sure)

Am I right that I could not have an ipod connector as well as the CD?? I don't have  an Ipod but a Creative Zen Touch...can that be conncted in any way?

I've asked them to clean up the tail pipes...tyres seem oK...it's a VW Approved car....any other tips for things I should look out for when i pick it up next Monday??????

Thanks all for advice

Geoff,

Welcome to the club mate. Nice colour and spec.

You should have the highline computer with that spec - check Dieselman's link below to see the display and functionality (including Sat Nav/Audio/MFD and Comfort Settings) you should have in the central display of the dash pod:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=54779.0

Mobile phone cradle is hard wired dealer fit and can be removed/updated if required. Should leave no marks/holes in dash if properly fitted. Check link to VW options list to see compatible mobiles, including some Nokia models (dealer should be able to confirm the exact model - no doubt a bit outdated now) - see page 11:

http://www.vw.co.uk/assets/pdf/golf_hatchback_pricelist.pdf

You cannot have both the CD and iPod together, so if you want the iPod you will have to remove the CD, buy an appropriate lead and then either DIY or get the dealer to install the iPod connector. Link here:

Solvol Autosol or Autoglym will keep the tail pipes clean in future. Easy 2 min job.

Make sure the car is mint and you collect it in good daylight as light metallic paint will show up any swirl marks in bright sunlight (some chance at the moment !). Check for parking dings on the body and for any scuffs to the alloys, they are a b!tch to refurbish properly. You also need to decide upon a servicing regime - Long Life or Time/Distance, depends upon your annual mileage and driving style. The dealer will advise and set this up for you. Mechanics should be sound and you still have the balance of the manufacturers warranty for peace of mind.

Some good info and DIY tips here:

Just got to get it now and enjoy the ride  What have you done with the Volvo ?

Hi Cass
I e-mailed you but it bounced...Berbatov was brilliant eh?
Decided to keep the Volvo for a few weeks-clear the house out then sell it privately rather than take the dealers paltry £14k (it's less than 2 years with all the toys except SatNav)

Not sure the mobile is dealer fit. I;ll probaly forget the I pod -have enough CDS anyway...you know at our age.. Des O Conner/Mantovani (only joking)

I did notice a couple of littel dinks in the bonnet and one alloy curbed ...and in hindight maybe I should have insisted they be repaired ...I did go with the well it is is a second hand car comments .. I think the bonnet dinks may annoy ..perhaps I will try dentbuster or phonr the dealer and see if they will do anything.... I guess not.

Thansk again for all the tips

Geoff,

Agreed, Spurs did very well against Bolton and your'e right Berbatov is now showing what a class player he is. Now only got to get Robbie Keane's red card overturned today and it's been a good week. Never a handball, clearly the chest  Need RK back to put West Ham to the sword next Sunday :smug:

Just got tickets for Bryan Ferry next week in Gateshead !

Get the bonnet dings done, they should pop out no problem with dentmaster as long as they can get access to them and the paint is unbroken. The bonnet skin is a bit thin and you should never press it closed with your hand - just drop it shut from about 12 - 18".

Also get them to have the alloy refurbished or replaced - it will annoy you in the long run. Make sure you contact the dealer, better still go back in and tell them you are having second thoughts about the car and that the sale is conditional upon these issues being put right or you want some discount to get it done yourself. No dealer should sell a flagship model with these defects.

Enjoy the car.

I was quite concerned at the weekend when I shut the bonnet and it flexed under the pressure - it'll be dropped from now on!

Doesn't the Highline Computer take up the whole centre of the display with LEDs, whilst the Mid-line is split, half and half with the LED the lower part and fixed icons, such as the open door symbol in the upper half?
