Noisy Alternator

Hello everyone, I just came back after a long drive yesterday when I noticed what sounded like a fire alarm bell coming from under the bonnet, so I open it up and notice that the noise was coming from the alternator or something associated with it. I phoned my brother and put my mobile to the noise and he said it sounds like a bearing had gone. If so is this common and how do I go about fixing it and prices. If anyone can advise this would be greatly appreciated. BTW its a MK3 8v 1996.

take it to a local auto electrician they can change the bearings for you ,you can do it yourself but it only cost me ?25  the last one i had done.

I did mine on my mk1, bosch alternator. Not sure if its the same as the mk3 but certainly is the same as the mk2 and Hazels Audi.

I picked up the bearings from a local supplier. Bearing manufaturer was SKF and the part numbers were: 6201-2RS1 and 6303-2RS1

have a look in your yellow pages for bearing suppliers, as long as you take the old one with you they can get the numbers off it.
