New brakes sticking :O(
« on: 26 February 2007, 07:24 »
I did the front pads yesterday - girling calipers, an i was impressed at how easy it was however the nearside caliper was awkward to close again, had to use the g-clamp to get it the last 1/2 inch or so to put the guide pin bolt in.

I greased the pins as well. It frees off over time sitting but as soon as i brake once it keeps holding on a bit. Do you think it'll free off or will i have to strip that caliper again? That piston was quite hard to push back compared to the other one. MPG is sub 20 just now because of it

Sounds to me like you damaged something! Might be a case of a new caliper!

I think the guide pins (or one of them) are bent len, The top one is tight to go in at first and sticks coming out. I'll have to try bodging it to work smoothly till the weekend cos i never catch a shop or owt after work.

The brakes were smoking when I made it to the drive last night....17mpg to

I just got back in the house, 1 hour late for work at the mo but im soaked to the skin,

Got the pins out and smoothed & polished the sticky one till it works perfectly. Not sure if the piston is sticking too tho cause the last owner let the pads get right down to the metal (all four!) so the piston has been extended for a loooooong time and it doesn't like retracting now.

Luckily the moving bit is easy to take off from the breakers. If i find one wi thick pads then chances are the piston is still free. I take it its a pain to remove the piston and clean it?
