Uneven Tyre wear MK5 GT (170)
« on: 23 February 2007, 21:36 »
Hi

Can anyone please help?

I have noticed some uneven Tyre wear on the inside of both back tyres on my Mk5 GT.  The inside edge on both tyres has worn unevenly. I'm not talking just differently from the rest of the tyre but as you feel around the edge of the tyres you can detect the ups and downs as you go round! Taken it back to the main dealer and they reckon its 'normal'!  The car has covered just under 14K miles  from new and these are the original bridgestone tyres.  Any help much appreciated.

My last car that did that had a dead shock - but if it is identical on both sides, I'd imagine it is more likely to be a major alignment / bush problem. Is the Mk5 independent rear susp? or on a trailing beam?

If it is independent, it would be bizarre that both rears could have uneven inner tyre wear - as this is a sure sign of a fault on both sides. If it is a trailing arm assembly, some play in the bush that holds this could cause that problem (I forget its name, the mk4 had one)

I would really press VW, because aside from an unsafe car, you have 2 prematurely dead and expensive tyres.

Mmmm sounds like a  problem that your wife maybe at the source of!

The rear suspesion is independant and it sounds as if the rear toe in / out is incorrect. if there is no kerb damage to the wheels i'd say that its clear grounds for a warranty check. You esp. want to get it sorted before you stick on a new set of tyres.

Agree will Ollieb7 - rear suspension is independent and this is not normal. Sounds like it is an alignment problem and needs checking/adjusting asap.

Many Thanks for the replies.

Ollieb7 - Not married and only I drive the car so can't blame anyone!  The car has been booked in with another main dealer so I can get a second opinion.  Will keep you posted on the outcome.

Hi Guys,

I've had the same problem on both front and rear. The fronts were down to the canvas on the inside! Cost me a complete set of misworn tyres. Had 4 wheel tracing performed and thought that would fix it.

Took my car to local dealer today, Cooks of Peterborough to investigate a excessive road noise/drumming sound (thinking bearings) to be told that uneven wear on rear tyres was causing problem and to replace them again!

Had the tyres swapped round to get as much wear from them

Car done 34k from new and this will be second full set. Not Happy!

If you have dunlop sportmaxxes on then thats your problem.  Many people have had issues with uneven wearing with these tyres including myself but not to that extent.  Changed the type of tyre and had alignment checked (it was fine) and haven't had a problem since.

He mentioned in the OP that he has Bridgestones.
