ye it could be either you have a oil cooler fitted in other words instead of the pipe coming from the engine going back into the airbox it goes into a little container or you have a hole in the pipe :D

I dont think it has an oil cooler....its a 1990 8v Digifant. It has a full Magnex exhaust including manifold, been chipped and a huge induction kit.....could this make a whistle noise? It makes it when driving, no noise on idle. The alternator belt kind of looks like its eating its way through the cambelt cover, will get a pic up later .

It could be the fan belt, tightened mine the other day and suddenly had a whining/wheezzing noise. Wierd though.

overtightened belt. Check the alternator, and pas/water belts.

Edit: whoever asked do you have a turbo fitted needs killing. Turbos don't whistle. (good turbos)

Slick....hello mate   Is your car still in Aylesbury?

May sound stupid but is it bad to have an overtightened belt, could it snap?  My 8v Digi does not have p.a.s

Aye mate, golf is still in ayelsbury, just getting stuff together for it, but haven't been very well recently.

If it's been replaced recently then no, as it will loosen off after a little while, but you need to retighten it after the first week or so. (at least that's when i do it) If it has just started to do it, then check for all signs of wear, and see if it is colliding with anything on rotation. Might just be worth checking it all out, and if something does contact it, then get a shorter belt and pivot the alternator forward a little more.

Might be worth checking this too, I have a whistling noise coming from my engine bay too and I tracked it down to this little plastic cap (circled) you can just see that the top of it has somehow developed a hole. Just noticed it today so theres a job for the weekend
