The rear mount's are like you said a metal cup with a rubber ring..... they don't tend to rot and I have never had to replace one(all though i want to replace mine as my rear end is still a bit lively on the passenger side and that's all there's left)

Well... done the front shocks - and now I'm a little confused. that vw tool  for the slotted nut... what slotted nut? Took the struts out & dismantled them with out it.

Had to use the old springs, as the top spring seat was 65mm, and the mk2 gti spring tops are 80mm. does anyone know if there is an 80mm spring top seat - just the separate metal bit that fits below the big rubber doober.- needs replacing anyway as the existing ones are rusty

Also is it usual for the top of the whole assembly to be flush with the top of the suspension turret when the car is up on the stands, but when I drop it on its wheels they stand 10 - 15 mm above them?

Mind seeing as the old ones were more like 25 mm... worthwhile job anyway - noticable less bounce and the old bearings had distinct 'play' in them.

Looking forward to next weekend when I'll be doing the rears - assuming the damn ebay shocks ever turn up!

How long did it take you to do the fronts in the end chap?

I guess it took 3-4 hours all up - but I'd never done it before and couldn't find my haynes:huh:

I was lucky though - I have access to a reasonable garage with tools - you'll prolly need an impact driver for the 18mm bolts at the bottom of the front suspension leg - and remember you're supposed to renew them. oops  :embarassed:

quite an enjoyable job really - I haven't bothered getting the camber & tracking done yet as I still haven't got round to putting my front springs on - anyone got a set of 80mm spring cups / plates (or what ever the heck they are called) lying around going rustier?

will prolly do that this weekend.

I would also check the spring's will fit in the strut bottom as i would expect these to be different between the 2 sizes...And the only different sized cup's i know of are made by eibach but i am sure these are to fit 65mm springs to an 80mm car???

the springs look identical to the old ones - its just the pig tail coil at the top is 80mm not 65mm - but then i have been wrong before :embarassed:

make you sure you get your camber and toe done! dont leave this or you will get through tyres like nobodys business! you will run on the inside edge if you dont have this corrected.... as i found out!
