In gear times - ED30 Vs R32
« on: 19 February 2007, 09:20 »
I Clocked the other day that the ed30 has nearly as much torque as the R32. Being lighter i would have thought that this should kick the arse out of the R32 from 30 to 70 (through the gears).
Anybody know what these overtaking stats are?

Hi Ollieb7,

As we all know, VW official stats vary from actual road test results.

What I can say is that Volkswagen Driver magazine is out this week and is road testing the edition 30 (unknown whether manual or DSG).

VW Driver always compares the test results with past test result of VW cars in its class, so they will almost definitely compare it with both the R32 and the standard GTI.

Looking into my back catalogue of mags the road test stats they use are:-

0-50
0-60
0-70
0-80
30-50 in3rd
0-50 in4th
50-70 in 3rd
50-70 in 4th
50-70 in 5th
50-70 in 6th
max speed
overall test fuel consumption
unladen weight
power to weight ratio

When they test drove the GTI DSG they only recorded test figures for 30-50 in 3rd and 50-70 in 3rd as both are registered in kickdown.

However they have already tested the standard GTI 4dr DSG, the R32 2dr DSG and the GTI2dr Manual and there are some interesting test results

                           R32(DSG)         GTI(DSG)      GTI(man)
0-50                       4.6                    4.7               4.5
0-60                       5.8                    6.3               6.0
30-50                     2.6                    2.3               3.0
50-70                     3.1                    3.3               3.4

If you add together the 30-50 and 50-70 times in third, the GTI DSG comes out top with 5.6 secs as opposed to the R32 DSG (5.7 secs) and the manual GTI (6.4 secs).

Unfortunately the one they do not do is a 30-70 through the gears, but I would suspect that you are right when looking at these results. :wink:

Woo...hoo :grin:

So... If you stay in kickdown....

R32 = 5.7 secs   30-70mph :embarassed: :shocked:

ED30 = 5.4 secs   30-70mph :cool:

Seems like I can now just relax:smug: :smug: :smug: :smug: :wink:

Imagine the extra poke from a bit of tuning!

As much as I love the R32, the constant trips to the local Shell garage are getting tiresome, so I'm looking forward to the Edition 30.
