Kangaroo style
« on: 25 January 2004, 23:19 »
Seems that the Mk2 digi likes to jump around a bit, previously it was cronic, changing the engine mounts have helped, but in traffic it can be hard to stop the juddering and jumping feeling i am getting from it.

Now my thoughts are that either the clutch is on its way out or badly adjusted, I also here a low rattle when the clutch is not being depressed. I am thinking that the release bearing is causing this.

Anyone had similar experiences that could point me in the right direction. At least now the engine is not moving around as much but would still like to sort it out.

i had a similar problem when i first got my new mk2 and wondered what it was for ages until i took it to my brother-in-law who proceeded to tell me that it wasnt my clutch but in fact, cos my isv was setup wrong....the mixture was wrong to compensate for this......the remedy????? clean the isv out with loads of carb cleaner and reset the spring inside, and ...sort out the mixture. result? car now runs lovely!!!!
just a thought!!

Howdy All!
Ive got a little concern about the car having a slight vibration when at idle aswell. Thought it could be the engine mountings but will try this isv thing...But...

It may sound dopey but what is the ISV? ???

Cheers All

ISV - Idle stabiisation valve. On an 8v digi its that cylinder looking thing that sits on top of the engine.

Aha, you could be on to something there, I will attack the ISV with some cleaner for sure. Not sure how to reset the spring though, how does that work?

I thought it could be related to something other than the clutch as it does it when just coming onto the throttle when in traffic. Also it does not seem a problem when i boot it. Wonder if attacking the air inlet system with cleaner will also help, could be carbon deposts causing the butterflies in the throttle body to stick.

It does sound clutch related, The rattle would make more noise when the pedal is pressed as your pushing the release bearing against the friction plate.

Whats the action of the clutch like as if its making the driving that bad it must be about to give up?

Well the clutch has been like this for a while, in fact its been the same since this engine went in the car about 15000 miles ago. It does tend to judder on pick up though the noise actually goes away when the pedal is pressed.

Having cleaned out the pipes and the ISV, it is slightly better, although i think the symptoms could be a multiple cause. Someone has mentioned to me that i could be having a few problems with the in tank fuel uplifter pump.
