gti virgin...consumption
« on: 13 April 2003, 15:54 »
Hey all, quick question, just bought a mk3 GTI, and dont think i'm getting as good consumption as I should - worked out to be around 20mpg - managed to get 120 miles from half a tank - is this about average or could there be something wrong?  What do you guys get?

Cheers,

Matt

Hi, i was a gti virgin till last sept. got a mk3 8v gti which i thought was perfect. but it was getting 22mpg and about 230 miles to a tank. not perfect!

found out it was overfuelling (because it was running dog rough). this was due to the throttle sensor which needed resetting. local maindealer did it for about ?40.

Now it is perfect getting about 28mpg with constant town driving, about 35mpg average with a mix of town and motorway driving.

Worth getting checked out as i've already saved the ?40 by using less fuel!

Hope this helps.

Hi there, bought a gti about 3 weeks ago.

Fuel consumption, was at best 43 mpg and at worst 32 mpg, until the fuel pump went.  When I replaced it and the filter, the fuel consumption changed - the best went down to 38mpg and the worst went up the 35 mpg.  Post on how u got on with the tuning.

Finally got round to getting it tuned, and it looks like the water temperature sensor/sender is knackered.  It keeps on telling the engine it is too cold, so the ECU increases the petrol intake.  Gonna fit the replacement on the weekend so hopefully it will solve the problem....

Cheers,

Matt

had mine since jan

my 8v fuel is =17 - mpg = race
37 -mpg = peak cruise
28 - mpg = average driving.

All depends on how you drive it.

vr6 average 30.7mpg according to the MFA. Must be going too slow ;)

previous mk3 16V average 32mpg, better but still driving too slow :-*
Ooh it's getting chilly in here, better turn up the Climatronic!
