OIL CHANGE QUERY
« on: 15 February 2007, 10:08 »
I am posting this here as i have had no joy on "Garage"

I was under the impression that a new car would need an oil change prior to 5000miles. Remember reading the arguments on here reference whether it should be 3000 or 5000 miles.

Anyway, rang a local dealer to enquire on the price and he said that my car does not need an oil change until the light comes on and as a guide it is either 1 yr or 10,000 miles!

So do i wait till 10,000 miles or get it done at 5000 miles (he also went on about long life oil)

I'm on the annual Time/Distance servicing regime but will get an oil change done this week at 3000 miles.

Old school

So i understand from what the VW Mechanic said, that all new Golfs are set up on the "time/distance" service, so why would you change oil at 3000miles? He recons that there is no need!

I was fully prepared to get the oil changed but would leaving it until 10000miles make much difference?

Well up until two weeks ago I was in the same quandary, my car was on variable service, but IÂ’d prefer fixed, so I had the car serviced at 7400 miles which was exactly one year from when I bought it, while it was in the dealers, I had them set it to fixed service schedule.

A personal thing, but I didnÂ’t like the idea of going for nearly 20K on the same oil.

On my new RS focus when i bought it new. I changed the oil and filter my self at 5000 miles then got the annual service when it was done again, around 10500. I did the same around 15000 and then again during the service at 2 years.

I like to change the oil every 3-5k on performance cars, it keeps things fresh and running smoothly and I will be doing the same with my edition 30 when i eventually get it

I changed the oil every 1000 miles in my Exige, but that was because it was used on the track a lot.

I'm also in the Time/Distance intervals.

Just after the car was new, checked the SID, worked out total distance the 'puter had worked out, halved the mileage and did my own oil change.  But that was because I have my own bulk supply of Castrol LongLife oil.  :nerd:

Irrespective of when you change the oil, even if you personally drop the intervals to 3-5k miles, you must always use the proper spec LongLife oil.  It may be a few bob more than the non-LongLife oil, but the LongLife stuff is actually rated at a higher temperature than non-LongLife stuff - pretty vital for turbo motors, especially when you "take advantage" of the available performance!

Any more oil Qs - ask away!

I've had my GTI for about 2 months and done circa 1800 miles so far.  I was a bit shocked when I checked the oil level at the weekend that it was edging towards the min mark   Is it normal for the FSI turbo engines to get through oil like its going out of fashion? - I've come to expect it a bit on my mr2 and wondered if it was the same with the gti, or is it just the first couple of thousand miles?

I'd say it was perfectly normal, mine used about 1 ltr in the first 2000 miles, and now hardly uses a drop.

Have peeps forgotten how to use a dipstick on a regular basis???

You really should keep it topped up to the max, especially if you like giving it large!  :nerd:
