Upgrading car at 18/19...anyone got any advice?
« on: 14 February 2007, 23:45 »
Sorry for this one...wasnt sure where to put it either...

I currently have a 1.6 Mk3 polo but want something a bit more modern and a bit quicker....

My choices are; to rebuild the polo and make it faster, or sell it and buy a golf Mk4....

The big question is....at 18 (not 19 till June) which if any of the Golfs would I get insurance on? obviously the GTI 1.8T would be the Golf of choice, but there is no way in hell I am going to get insurance on that is there?

Argh..god damn insurance! Found the perfect GTI that I wanted and then started looking at insurance

Any advice anyone has would be greatly apreciated.

Chears.

my friend ali rides round in a black mk4 golf match. He is also 18/19, i think this version is a 1.6 and comes with alloys etc.
nice, but still way to heavy and very slow though (think of the money you could spend on a mk2?)

If I cant get insurance on a MK4 golf I may as well stick with the mk3 polo that I have until I can get insured at 19-20...

There must be a way of getting more power out of the 1.6 polo!!!

Problem being a teen is the high premiums. Why not get yourself a nice MK2 1.6 and dress it up nicely. Would not cost the earth and you would have a good looking car.

Or G40 the polo?

LOL...If I stick a supercharged G40 in the polo the insurance is going to be worse than the golf!

Its suposed to be 75Hp as standard...I recon if I clean it up and can find some way of getting multipoint injection on it getting just under 90hp should be do-able...its not a heavy car either...

Its just finding the bits to do the engine...there are loads of places selling performance parts for zetec and pinto engines...but appear to be few for the 1.6 polo engine...

surely if you start trying to coax too much power from that engine your insurance is going to go up anyway?

Dunno if this helps, but I turned 20 in August 06 and had previously been driving a MK1 Polo L 895cc (about 40bhp) and was insured with admiral, i then got a MK2 Polo 1.1, I then got my MK1 Golf 1.6 - VERY heavily modified, everything is listed with the insurance company as being insured with a nice car is better than going to prison or court. - Anyway.. I'm with HIC who are Briiilllliant & lovely & friendly and its only costing me £600 TPFT with 1 years No Claims Bonus :D
