Aftermarket parts
« on: 09 February 2007, 17:29 »
Just got a quote from my local non VW garage for the following items:

Front wishbones (excluding ball joints): £80 each
Rear wheel bearings: £45 each
Cam belt & tensioner: £30

Got a "rough" estimate of £420 in total, including a service, all for a Mk3 8v Anniversary (96P).  They get the majority of their parts from Andrew Page.

Now this seemed a bit steep, and a quick look at Euro Car Parts confirmed this.  I don't want to go spending megabucks as i'm selling it shortly.  Thing is, are the parts that ECP stock of decent quality?  And while i'm at it, anybody know of any reputable VW specialists (if there is such a thing!) in or around Newcastle?

Much obliged

£420 sounds pretty reasonable given the time involved. Did you check gsf- apparently all good stuff, ecp stock varied quality stuff, some good some really cheap n nasty, or so I've heard.

Never heard of GSF.  Do you have any contact details?

Hi mate,

I'm in Newcastle, might be able to help.

I've just had my girlfriends mk3 gti 8v sorted with quite a few repairs by a bloke I've used for years. He's an engineer so bit more educated than the average mechanic, loves golfs (just done his son's up and loves my girlfriends), and just works for himself so prices are good.

We've just had done; discs/pads front and back, ball joints, suspension top mounts, power steering belt and adjusting bolt, cv boot, new rear hubs and a few other things (car is absolutely perfect now) all done with parts and labour for £350.

Drop me a line to paulmfinlay@binternet.com and I'll send you his details etc. (He's in Wallsend)

Cheers

When they are changing the cam belt , get the other belts changed at the same time.
