gt tdi 150 dump valve and chip
« on: 05 February 2007, 21:42 »
hi again

first of all i'll start by apologising to my mk2 for cheating on her as i've just bought my self a mk4 as well.

ok, now the question.

i've just bought a 2002 gt tdi 150 and i want to fit a dump valve to it. the only thing is i can't really find much info on one for this engine.

are there any draw backs or do you think it's a good idea and also, where can i get one that isn't gonna cost me stupid money.

all advice would be greatly recieved on this matter.

also i want to get it chipped. i've looked around and found companies that do stages 1-4 which would give me about 245bhp but this would cost a fortune.

i don't know whether to buy a superchip which would give me 189bhp or go for a re-map.

i really don't wanna f**k my engine but i really want a lot of power.

which is the best way forward guys

thanks for any responses

My advice to you would be get down to a rolling road and find out what you're putting out already - you may find that the 189bhp superchip is a waste of time.

When I took my (standard) PD150 to the first golfgti.co.uk rolling road shoot out at AMD in Bicester (See here http://www.golfgti.co.uk/viewpastevents.asp?eventID=42)  it was pushing out 186bhp. The PD engines are notorious for exceeding the manufacturers claims, so much so than very few of them actually put out less than 165, most over 170bhp, so an aftermarket stage 1 remap to 185ish bhp is often not great value for money.

Find yourself a tuner that deals with diesel cars and has a rolling road, so you can get a curve done before and after - this will ensure you're getting tangible results for your money. You can also discuss re-circ/dump valve options with them. AMD would be a good choice (not sure of your location).

Either way, I would say, looking for 245+bhp you're going to be looking at exhaust, filter, remap, and most likely a hybrid blower, which is going to cost you at least £2k. Additionally, some of the boost hoses are fatally weak on the PD engines, and at 3-4 years old will be getting rittle and towards the end of their usable life, especially is you start shoving major boost through them - additional expense here. I waould estimate 250bhp is going to leave you no change from £3k and the car will still handle mighty wooly!

Have you thought about a suspension upgrade? It might not make you any faster in a drag race, but you'll be considerably quicker cross country and will cost you 1/4 of the money! Having gone from one of these to a car (not that much quicker in a straight line, granted) I can't over emphasise the value of having a car that handles well.

thanks for your response there, it has really helped me.

the car is already lowered as well. i thought i'd post a piccie just to see what you think of it cos i'm quite proud of her.

i live in grantham (lincolnshire) so i'm sure there'll be somewhere in nottingham with a rolling road.

i'm really intrigued now to find out what she's kicking out.

do you recommend i change the boost pipework then.

thanks again

That's exactly what I've been thinking of for my TDI

Would like to get it a bit closer to the GTI in terms of suspension setup, don't know if this is doable, or advisable for the diesel?

Do you have any recommendations for companies to do it, and likely costs please?

cheers

lowering it will make a difference to it's handling but if you do it, do it properly and set it up on coilovers as you can adjust the damping and the ride height to your own requirements.

if you buy the suspension kit then any garage can do it but you'll be better of getting a full wheel alignment check which can cehck and adjust the tracking, camber and castor after the suspension is fitted.
