Can someone diagnose? Garage cant.....
« on: 03 February 2007, 18:04 »
Ok i have a j reg 1.3, i have this problem that comes and goes, when i slow down at lights etc, the car just dies. when i start it again it idles perfectly then it happens allover again. A local garage said that it was just the throttle body being dirty but i dont think it is, sometimes it doesnt cut out but idles very low and the engines feels like it is physically jumping if ya know what i mean lol, then when i leave the car for a while it seems to have stopped doing it, i think it mite be something to do with the carb but not to sure??? can anyone help??

sounds the carb is sucking in air. a common problem on carb engines.

check that it is secured fully. quite often the bolts can work loose and it will rock back and forth and suck air in and cause it to stall.

I think the carb is mounted on a rubber plate ( my old polos all were...) and this usually splits, which sucks air in. Take the carb off and wiggle the rubber mount- you'll see if it is split

also make sure there aren't any vaccum leaks in the rubber hoses. check for cracks and splits

I had this problem on an old Audi and it was the rubber mount. Start the car and and get hold of the carb and move it back and forth, left and right whilst listening to the engine. if the revs start fluctuating, then you have found your problem. Buy a new mount and take time and care fitting it. Lost washers in a carb are BADD NEWS!!
