Discount on a new GTI?
« on: 02 February 2007, 20:05 »
Hi, I am looking at getting a new 3 door GTI with metallic paint (still not sure on the colour), 18" Monza II's and the ipod connector in the front armrest. I've been to my local VW dealer and they've offered me £5000 for my current car (I was offered £4200 for it back in October at a different dealership when I went to enquire about the GTI!!) and the dealer has guaranteed to hold the price until the GTI is built if I decide to buy.

I have tried and tried to get discount on the new car and they have finally offered me free metallic paint (£365) but say this is the only discount I will get.

I know I can get a UK GTI for cheaper over the internet from drivethedeal (around £1000 off) or even cheaper if I go for an import, but a few people have warned me off an import.

My main question is: should I go through the dealer who will take my current car and offer a small discount or should I go with one of the internet brokers for more discount but have to sell my own car (and perhaps not get 5K for it) or should I get an import?

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Lots of opportunity now for discount on a UK supplied GTI and an even greater discount on an import. Always reassuring to buy new from a UK dealer, but if you are prepared to look further afield and sell your car privately, you can obtain a substantial discount on the car. On the face of it, the deal you are being offered is OK, but I am sure you can do better. If you intend to keep your new car for more than 3 years then I would recommend going down the import route. Best compromise is to get a firm quote an a discounted UK supplied car and see if the dealer can get anywhere near it - if not sell your car privately and take as much discount as you can get. Lots of options in this basic Google search:

Hi,Ive just ordered my GTI 30 from carselect and saved £800,UK spec and coming through UK dealer, and delivered to my door and they gave me £1700 more for my car,but I might try  and sell my car private.I found VW dealers not that helpfull one dealer offered me only 10000 for my C230 Estate. One dealer wouldn't even value my car,or let me test drive a car in the wet.I had a import merc before and had no probs with trade in on it.

Hi, Thank you both for the advice. I went back to the dealer but they said they could do no better than what they offered me so I've been looking elsewhere. I didn't know about carselect until this thread so thanks. They've quoted me over a grand off a new UK car with the options discounted aswell. Drivethedeal are still better by about £11. Would anyone recommend carselect over drivethedeal or drivethedeal over carselect or anyone else?

Thanks

Not had any problems with Carselect so far, but not had my car yet.

It comes april, which gives me more time to sell my car.Carselect have given me a good price for trade in,but not sure about selling my car ,never done that before. Not sure how much hassle it envolves.
