My insurance premium is due to go up from 600 per year on a 4grand mk4 1999 GTi turbo, to £800 on the Ed30. Cant see it being group 18....

(Those pescara wheels look shockingly poor,)

I think the wheels are smart ,I think their are supposed to be like the original wheels on the Mk1 I'm old enough to remember the first one.

All I can say guys is "You lucky B******s" I wish I could afford a dilemma like this one.
I didn't like the Mk v gti at first but now I can see what all you guys like about it. What gets me is how big it looks in the flesh compared to my mkiv gti.  The good thing is the more you lads buy mkv git's the more second hand ones come on to the market for us the poor relations.
I still think it (the mkv GTI) is expensive £20000 for a bottom spec car is a lot of money when you think about it. I know it has a lot of basic kit but I thought VW would have colour coded the whole body already without bringing out a special edition and charging another £3000 for it.
IMHO I'd buy a nearly new R32 for the same money as a new ed 30 and then you have the ultimate Golf, but what do I know I drive a Mk iv.

IMO I think vw has made just the right suttle changes to identify the ed30 from the standard gti. What you have to remember is its still only a gti. It maybe over priced, but would you still like to pay more for the same car. if so try buy an A3. Firstly is the alloys you say your car parked next to the ed30 looks much better, well I'm afread thats only a matter of opinion. Standard gti only get 17" monza wheels not 18" which means they were an extra, which imo If possible I woiuld of chosen the ed 30 wheels anyway,
which I think look far better and seperate the ed 30 from the standard gti. If you look at the euro spec ed 30 the gets the monza wheels painted black, now come on thats naff, the ed 30 uk spec wheel take you back to the early 80's which the ed 30 is supposed to be copying as with the tartan seats, there just enough difference to sepatate it from the standard gti and still look old skool. Then theres the power I think the extra premium is worth it for the extra power yes you could get a standard gti mapped/tunned for alot less but would you still have your warrenty? An extra 30ps over the standard gti has unlimited bragging rights down the pub. Then theres the limited numbers which makes it fell that wee bit special.
At the end of the day you's that have standard gti's think your getting your pants pulled down over the price. But as with any special edition it comes with a premium and a premuim that some people are prepared to pay to be exclusive.

One thing that people keep overlooking when they (rightfully) slate the trim and alloy changes on the Edition 30 is that VW did get something major right with the car.  As far as I am aware, the engine code for the Edition 30 is the same as that for the Audi S3 which means uprated pistons etc... which would be VERY expensive to alter on the standard car - all this means that you are not just paying for a re-map which people kep saying... in that light, its a very good car with a bit of a c*ck-up in the aesthetics dept.  Heres to 307bhp after a re-map

Hi as you will see I know have the Ed 30 on the road and prevously owned a gti.  I am well pleased with the Ed 30, the colour coding is a great improvement.  I had my doubts about the mixed seats and red stitching but in the flesh it looks and feels great (im looking forward to the summer, no hot sticky bum for me!!) The flares on the rear and front are a nice touch as is the lowered suspension, looks like its dragging on the floor,[remember the ones in the showroom were prob on suspension blocks] only downside you have to remember kerbs in car parks!!
The Ed 30 that I have has DSG and I am really impressed with it as the gti didn't (the launch control is awesome) with the extra hp and launch theres no way I will be sat at the lights when you pull away!!
Again only my biast opinon now I have had the opportunity to try both!!

Forgot to mention my insurance from a gti to the ed 30 increased by £65.45 that takes me to 2nd December 2007, I didn't think that was too bad.  No mention as to the group difference.  I did a run on confused.com (bearing in mind I have 3 points and my wife had a non fault prang in 2005) it came back £427.41 being the cheapest.

So how can I have the cheapest quote be over a grand when I have a clean licence and 3 years no claims?

I don't understand how they work this out sometimes.
