In the lastest What Car mag they list the Edition 30 as a Group 17 for insurance, same as the standard GTI. Should help a little for the resale values down the line as well as keep the insurance costs same as the GTI.

Anyway, always possible What Car have the details wrong but normally they pretty good on this type of detail,

Maybe I'm too much a businessman.

I bought a 5d GTI manaul, which is now 15 months old and done 23k.  I save £1200 going for a manual and understand that an ed 30 is about 2k more than a standard GTi.

So - call it a £3200 saving - for that I could do a revo tune (£500+ VAT) taking it to 265Bhp and put alot of fuel in the tank.  I challenge anyone in a DSG to be faster than my standard golf away from the lights - learn to drive your cars guys. 

Official figures: .3 sec? Thats a good start with little wheelspin (which is probs where the DSG makes its gains). 

Save some dosh - buy a standard GTi with a standard (and stronger gearbox), Revo it (if you want), and enjoy feeling that you're driving the car - not the computer.

Must admit I love my standard manual GTI, but I agree that it was/is overpriced (particularly when specced with extras - mine was £25k when bought new 

Equally, I am not that impressed with the Edition 30 and it looks even more overpriced to me.

ok for a start you cant compare standard with modified,

so the edition 30 is more powerfull.

the price of most remaps is £580 inc vat plus the usuall extra insurance at around £100 per year, and as mentioned before engine, 

ecu and gearbox/drive train warrantee will be void with VW

but if you were to compare modified with modified then thats standard gti remaped 250 bhp and edition 30 remaped 310bhp

the difference in price is £1250 if you put 18 inch alloys on a standard gti.

wheels are a matter of taste, (i personally dont care for the monzas. prefer the pescaras)

what you get for your £1250 extra then :-

heated seats

leather interior with tartan seat centers

edition 30 sills

edition 30 badges

red stitched steering wheel

golf ball gear knob with red stitched gaitor

red edged mats

deeper front spoiler

different rear valance

colour coded body parts

different tfsi engine, with larger turbo, stronger block, pistons, rods, head, larger vol injectors, etc

30bhp extra

tinted rear light clusters

so to clarify

gti with 18"s and a remap is £21625.00

ed30 with 18"s £22295 ( £670 difference )

hope thats cleared up things for anyone that was unsure about what the extra money was for

bmx, your missing the whole point here,£23000 for a gti is far too high for a car thats not worth EVEN MORE money then the 1st overpriced standard spec car is. I wouldnt have a LOW SPEC edition 30 cus its too pricey, the car only really comes into itself the more you add to it, making it WAY TO EXPENSIVE TO BUY FROM NEW!, best thing imo is to wait and maybe get one after the 1st year bring buying prices down for a HIGH spec gti ed 30 .From what ive seen so far, to get the car with enough bits on it, your paying around £27000!!!!. not worth it imho. I payed £22000 for a 12 month old car, 5000 miles on the clock , with every xtra (except sunroof).Do that with your edition 30 and your talking just under £30000!!!!. thats Audi money,or maybe BMW something or other!!. Or perhaps a high spec R32 , now your talking!

that was the whole point of my post was whether do i chop mine in with all its extras or shell out minimum of 5 grand for a standard ed 30!. NO CHANCE..  Im gonna wait...

I had the choice of Ed30 in basic trim or slightly specced up GTi for the same money. Self imposed budget meant I didn't want to afford an Ed30 with the spec i wanted on the GTi.

I went with the GTi in the end, would rather have xenons and monza 2's etc than red stitching, prob higher insurance and lower mpg. I do however like the painted skirts and valance, but i still feel most of the money is a brand premium for having a special edition. Some people go for this, I decided not to fall for the hype.

At the end of the day it's my every day car and the running costs are high enough already. Would be very surprised if the Ed30 does not come in at group 18.

I think its interesting to see all these replies, again probably all if not most from existing GTi owners.

I agree maybe if I aleady had a year or so old GTi I may fell the ED30 is not that special.

However I don't and its my first ever VW GTi.

So I say that the extra dosh is a good buy TBH.

If you tot up the deceant extras you get on the ED30, 18's, heated seats, colour coding, front lip, half leather, then these will go to near justify the extra. The extra trim bits don't and I totally agree, a badge won't full stop.

However the definate nod for the extra dosh is the engine.

It is a bigger Turbo, different block, pistons and re-worked internals. Its been limited to 230bhp, for a reason VW state 30 years, but we all know if the R32 wasn't in production we could have the S3 bhp.

Fact is if it is mapped this will do 300bhp easily.

I'm sure when we all get our cars if they are RR'd they will probably be doing more than 230 anyway.

To me thats worth the extra dosh.

I'm looking forward to my new GTi, but if it had not appreared I still would have gone for a normal GTi, even though I raved to everyone, that they are far too expensive!

The ED 30 is group 18

I'm fairly sure its 17.  The R32 is 18.

With regards to whether its worth it, I have pretty much done what phil mentinoes above and spec an Ed 30 up to about 26K. 

Now that is a lot of money, but to me I think its worth it because I like the GTi for itself. 

When you say expensive, its usually a relative thing.  e.g. expensive "when compared to a focus", or, "for same money you can get x"

I drove the ST and the interior was shockingly cheap.  I'm not particualry bothered if for same money I can get something much faster etc. as I am happy with the GTi.

As this is a car I intend to own for a good few years, it's not so much a problem for me what its up against, as it is still cool in itself.   

I think the point about this being my first Gti is also valid.  I'm amazed that some people will consider trading in their car every year just to get the latest model.

Anyway. Just another point of view.
