My bubbles burst, edition 30 not what id hope...
« on: 30 January 2007, 20:34 »
Went to my local dealers today and saw a Red 3 door edition 30 on the forecourt looking all shiny. After reading all the posts and seeing the photos on here,i have to say i was gutted that his model was released after i had payed £22500 for a high spec laser blue gti just a few months before. I was though after seeing it, dissapointed about the way it looked, i parked my gti along side it and to be honest (and even the salesmen said) to look at the standard gti with Monza 18's on looks STILL looks better then the ed 30. Those pescara wheels look shockingly poor, the interior didnt look as "in ya face" red stitching as the photos made it, and those tartan seats arent to everyones choice, full leather imo still would of been better,

I came to the conclusion after seeing it, i was abit disapointed that the ed 30 wasnt that much a step up from my current mk 5 GTI as i'd hoped It would be,and that if your buying your 1st mk 5 golf gti , it would be a great buy, but for those peeps that have a near new GTI , And thinking of a part ex deal , then it really isnt worth spending at minimum of 5 grand to change it.Maybe more viable after say a year or so when more 2nd handers start to appear on vw uks website. £23 grand for a gti is imo still is  too much for an already overpriced car at £21000 for a standard basic one(before spec'ing it)

Me Thinks ill keep my old girl for a wee while longer!!

Agreed BMX, I have owned the new GTI two years, and seeing the Black ED30, it looks the business (even the wheels).
I am not disappointed to be upgrading, it's not just the looks - the Performance will be better.

I agree with Phil, the wheels on the ED 30 look crap, when I look at them I get visions of the boy racers who put wheels like that on their Saxos and Puntos back in the 90s.  Don't call me a grandad, cos I'm only 29!

Personally I think the red switching, although retro, is a little overboard, but then I guess they have to make it look different from standard.

on the other hand the colour coding looks the business, as the black rear valence looks crap on light coloured standard cars, no matter what model.

but then the extra 30BHP is perhaps worth the extra cash.  does anyone know if this extra power will bump it up an extra insurance group?

well we all have our own opinion, thats just mine, 30hp more, some red stitching and pimply gear knob and some poor looking wheels, its not worth the xtra £. if i want mine to go faster , then id spend £407 on a morego upgrade.

It may be the edition 30 may be up a bracket to group 18, same as the r32

Ahh but you don't get that feeling of being superior to those unfortunates that don't own an ed30.  lol.

yes but all the shock when a ed 30 owner wonders why he couldnt beat a dsg gti off the lights. they would head back to the dealer demanding their money back!!

I agree with you in some ways Phil. The Monza IIs are the best wheels VW have done in a long while. They are the perfect wheels for the GTI. If the Pesci's were BBS CH's in a light metalic finish would they look better. I think the BBS Motorsport typography on the wheel adds something to them. This car look very well with the BBS CK wheels in anthracite.

I was looking for a GTi with Monza IIs and leather. But........ For £1700 more for the ED30 you can have half leather, 18" wheels and more power included in the warranty. I know that you can get a remap with the suppliers own warrenty. But this power upgrade is from the manufacturer. SO for just a little more than the price of a leather interior its not too bad. Mind you BMW only charge £995 for full leather on the 3 series sport or £1300 on the SE. Leather is standard on the Audi A3 S line. (But the car costs more   but you can get a discount). VW leather IMPO feels very hard, cardboard? The leather on the wifes Merc is much better quality.   Don't  get me started, went to the Seat garage this weekend and the Leon FR TFSI DSG only costs £900 more not £1400 more like on the GTI!!
Anyway rant over. The GTI is a very expensive car and I think that VW are pushing it when compared to the Focus ST with regards to price. But I love the looks of the GTI and its great to drive,it makes me buzz like my old MK2 GTI did.
Mind you the wife thinks I'm nuts spending all this money on a car
Anyway rant over. Each to their own Phil and I know that you like your GTI as your on here so often.
After that I need a beer..............
Bye Bye Edition 30
