Just bought a Rallye, need some info..
« on: 30 January 2007, 13:48 »
Firstly wanna say hi to everyone on the forum..

I've just p/x'd my valver for a Rallye last week, it's not a minter but is a solid car.  Basically just needs a few things sorting out to get it perfect.  Got a few questions too and thought this would be the best place to ask em..

Firstly, it came with some 17" TSW's on, and they are scraping the arches at the front on tight corners, also the rear ones scrape if i'm cornering on a camber. I wanted to get some new wheels but what are the perect size wheels for a Rallye? I guess 17's are jus a little bit too big?

Also, do I have to buy a Rallye alternator or can any mk2 gti alternator fit ok? Think mine's on the way out as it doesn't charge battery enough and has struggled to start the past 2 days although up until then it has started fine, I only bought it last Thursday, but like I said, i've had no problems with starting till yesterday..

Here's a pic of her:

I know i've got more questions and will add them when they spring to mind, but if anyone could help on the 2 queries i've asked above i'd be really grateful..

Just remembereed the other thing I needed to ask.  Where can I get a new compressor for the climate control as the bearings have gone on the one which is on the car now so has been removed, which means there is no blower, hot or cold, so need a window open to stop my self from steamng up?  I've been told by the last owner that climate control is rare on mk2's so i'm guessing that the compressors are hard to get hold of too? He suggested I just take a standard heater and front panel from a mk2 and replace all the climate control but i'd rather just fix what i've got.. I've been to my local VW dealer and they can't source one for me and they have no idea where i'm gonna get one from which is a lot of use.  I know there's a few Rallye owners on here so hoping you can help..

Thanks in advance..

Welcome to the forum and what a great buy,      As for the  alternator,  get it reconditioned as you then will know what you have,  roughly around £40.00,  the compressor can be fixed try these lads http://www.hardingautos.co.uk and the standard wheels should be 15" but maybe wrong on this?

If it is a 90 mph per hour wind and you drive your car at 90mph downwind, if you stick your head outside would you feel the wind?

Alternator is specific to the G60, sorry! Though you may just be able to replace the bushes, try giving GSF a ring :)
From the factory it would have had 15" alloys, I forget the name off the top of my head but they were multi spoke with an odd looking centre cap, almost like a 4 leaf clover. A set of ET30 16" rims would look good on a rallye, and fill out the arches without scrubbing I recon.  Best to speak to fellow Rallye owners about that though :)

....Sebrings ?!

16" BBS RS alloys a must!  but rare and lots of $$

I wonder if the air con compressor is the same as on other VAGS? like a Passat or Mk2 Golf?

... it's turned into a fashion show for poofters.

Are these the Sebring alloys you are talking about? , how much you wanting for them?

Would love some BBS RS alloys, but like you say, they aint cheap, might dig deep though.. Was also thinkin along the lines of going the Porsche route, I know design 90's look good on gti's, but not sure about a rallye? Or even some old-skool vette wheels? Just checking my options at the mo..

Thanks for all the info anyway, will get in touch with them guys about the compressor..

Welcome to the forum, I'll try and answer a few question for you.....17s are cool on a Rallye if you get them right and jv (site owner) used to have 8x17s ET25 on his, BBS RX I think they were. I bought some new ones for mine and they are TH Mono's 8x16 ET25, but I don't know what they look like yet as I'm waiting for the better weather before I put them on.

As for the alternator, I've also heard that they are Rallye/G60 specific, but I had a problem with mine just after I bought it and my garage went direct to Bosch and got one for me, (I may be able to get a number for you) they reckoned it was different to the one I had on, but the one on there was very new (bought by previous owner and less than two years old) and it was absolutely fooked and had completely collapsed internally. If that's your Rallye/G60 alternator for £250+ then b0llocks to that I say. Mine's been ok so far. * touch wood

The Rallye PCD is 4x100 so you would need adaptors to fit D90s, I've seen a Rallye with them on and they looked good, but I was told that it wasn't wise to run a Rallye with adaptors on, so I stayed clear of that route.
......now officially dubless.
