GTI 16v fuel consumption
« on: 28 January 2007, 11:35 »
Hey Guys

I'm looking for a MK3 Golf GTI but I'm not quite sure whether to go for an 8v or 16v.

A major factor for me is going to be the fuel consumption. I've heard people say that the consumption on a 16v is similar to that of a VR6, so I'm curious to hear your experiences. I realise that when you drive the car a little more assertively it's going to have an impact!

All feedback appreciated!

Cheers

Lee

I've got a 16v with a AmD remap pushing 175bhp and will get 35-40mpg doing 50 on clear b roads, 32-36mpg on a motorway doing cruising speeds, and 30ish around town. If I keep the foot off the happy pedal then I will get 320-340 miles from a £45 tank of Tesco 99ron. If I have lots of fun then the amont drops to 260-280...but it's so worth it

I hope this doesn't spark a 8v vs 16v argument, but I tried several of both before deciding on the 16v. Imo it has all the drivability of the 8v but has all the power and fun on tap when needed....I would say 16v all the way

Where abouts are you as there might be a member near you who could give you an example of the difference. If you are near Reading then holla up as could show you the way of the 16v young Padowan

Hey mate, do you have the power and torque curves for your AMD remap? I'm running a cheapskate blitzchip which has smoothed out power band but not done too much noticable to the torque band. Cheers, Garfay.

16v over the 8v any day of the week, i have both.

16v has traction control (EDL) its automatic and turns off over 25mph (40kph) and it has a hydraulic clutch vs cable on the 8v.

My dash on the 16v is metric im getting 6.5-7.8L per 100kms in cruise mode around town or open road.

Much nicer motor that 16v abf  loves a good thrashing!! It is one of the great vag 16v 4pots

Can handle upgrades too. Chip, cams, turbos etc...

I have to say that my 16v drinks fuel...get between 21-26mpg around town....around 230 miles from £45 ...this is more since i put my induction kit on and ii think it needs to be set up correctly i.e a good tune up.Can be heavy with the right foot though coz i love the sound.

ideally woulsd like to get down to the guys at amd as hypermonkey has but i gotta sort out my abs problems first, the £400 i could of used for the remap has to go on a abs pump.

If fuel consumption is your only criterea then you shouldnt be buying a Golf Gti.

There is a very simple device on all cars designed for economy - its called an accelerator!
Less pressure on this thing called an accelerator and you get better consumption!
Its a miracle!

Seriously though if all you want is economy and you dont care how fast your car is then buy an 8v. But dont come moaning to us when you find its sluggish!
If you wanna drive it fast now and again then get a 16v and do the usual induction kit/exhaust stuff and a chip/remap and have a real fast economical motor!

Thanks for your feedback guys.

It's probably worth giving it a bit of background.....

I've had a couple of MK3's. An 8v and a VR6. Both of which I enjoyed. I went to view an 8v Anniversary over the weekend and in addition to the fact that it was a bit of a shed, I must admit that I found it a tad slow.

Following a couple of other cars, I then purchased the best car that I've ever had..... a MK5 GTI.

I then found a job in London, sold the car and then lost my job in London. I'm now car-less and am deliberating over whether to get an 8v or a 16v. My heart says 16v but my head says 8v.

If I can return reasonable fuel consumption with a 16v, then that's where I'll go.

Thanks for the offer Hypermonkey, it's appreciated. I live in Taunton, so it'd be a bit of a hike.

If there's anyone closer to me that would like share, I'd be a willing student.

Cheers

As hypermonkey said it depends on how you drive.

I've had both 8v and 16v mk3's, over a long average i'd say they were similar (motorway/single carriageway/town)

With the 16v you have the option to drive it like you stole it

If you drive sensibly you can get very good fuel economy.

I very rarely get below 300 miles out of a tank.

Hypermonkey - whereabouts in reading are ya? I'm thinking of getting AMD to remap my 16v, would be good to see what it's like, could we sort something out?
