More power steering problems
« on: 27 January 2007, 18:25 »
Right been having a lot of trouble with my PAS on my 8 valve mk2 Gti and im starting to wish that i had just left it alone.

Anyways got a belt from Vw part number 026 145 271 spoke to the guy at the parts desk and he told me that it was the rite belt etc and bottom line is its to small i managed to get it on the 3 pulleys but it was so tight that i had sparks flying off of the PAS and waterpump pullys cause they had been pulled to close and that was without me playing with the tensioner. Now i put the old one back on which measures 10x735 the guy at Vw gave me one that measured 9.5x730.

Now with the old belt on which is the 10x735 i have got PAS but only when the engines high revving so when im parkin i have to struggle and keep blipping hte throttle. The belt is properly tensioned etc but i also noticed that it looks as tho my power steering fluid has leaked out the top of the bottle and the fluid level is now below the MIN line so cud this be a factor as to why my steering is crap? Also im gettin a really loud whirring noise from what seems to be the pump, could this be due to lack of fluid???

Cheers all

Step 1:
http://www.vwspares.co.uk/g2belts.php
1.6-1.8 8v Dayco 10.0735 £1.83 :)

Step 2:
Put more PAS fluid in, you're killing the pump!  Dexron II ATF from halfords will do the job :)

Right topped it up with power steering fluid and still no joy, insted it decided to cover my engine bay in PAS fluid. So im thinking either i have a air lock in my PAS system or maybe my pump is fudged. Its deffinitly nothing to do with the tension of the belt so thats whats leading me to believe its either a faulty pump or Air lock.

to fix an airlock you simply turn the rack from lock to lock with the lid off the bottle, when i had my system spew fluid all over my bay it turned out to be because of a massive leak at a pipe near the pump.  When the fluid gets low massive air bubbles get sucked in by the pump, and then pop out of the reservoir again spraying pas fluid all over the shop.  Next time, top it up, turn it a bit, top up again, turn a bit more, repeat till you can turn it from lock to lock without the level dropping below max :)

Also, check for leaks in the system :)

Right drained all the old fluid out the car checked the entire system for leaks and its fine.

Replaced old manky fluid with decent VW stuff and refilled it etc, and still no joy so im now suspecting that the pump may be faulty??

As said on tickover thers no PAS but as soon as i hold the revs at 2000rpm it works fine, this is why again i reckon it could be the pump, any idea how much a pump will set me back? I know there 110 from GSF but are they any good??
