Power loss and cutting out problems.
« on: 22 January 2004, 00:28 »
Make/model 1987/88 golf 1.6 litre CL. not a GTI.
Its around 10 miles to work on urban roads.

On a few occasions in the last 2 weeks i have been driving along in 3rd or 4th at around 40-50 mph and then all of a sudden i loose power and the car starts to slow down quite quickly obviously then i put my foot down further but the car continues to slow down, its not until i have my foot down 80 - 90% of the way down that i start to accelerate again violently. It is starting to happen quite regularly as of late.

Also, when i have been doing around 40 mph for a while, on a dual carriage for example and then have to stop at a set of lights, the car often cuts out, it usually starts ok afterwards, one i have had a problem, it was as if it was flooded.

I've also noticed that i'm using a lot of fuel, around 200 miles per tank (?35).

Any ideas anyone????

Thanks for your response,

Yeah, gunna get some STP carb cleaner and run that through.

Plus i thought i'd better change the alternator (as it looks like its been there from the start) change the spark plugs 'n' leads plus a new air filter, possibly a new dizzy cap too.

I think the timing may also need a look at.

I'll let you know how i get on next week,

oh, if anyone has come across this before, please just jot ya comments down,

cheers

alternator should be ok, if your lights are dimming/pulsing then the voltage regulator is shot, they arent expensive!

its worth changing the ht leads, distributor cap sparkies and rota arm tho, also put a new fuel filter on (cant hurt) and check all the vacuum connections are ok on your carb etc
