noticed something strange...

this morning there was what looked like hair coming from my exhaust - I pulled it out and it was quite a long length. I'm asuming my cat is knackered - is this right?

Hello mate.
Yeah I would presume its your cat (Catalytic converter). Otherwise its someone else's cat! (Meeow)
It shouldnt be anything to worry about immediatly....Try starting it up and then running round the back to see if its blowing anything else out.
Also for a new cat...try German ,Swedish and French, they occasionally give a discount if your a member of some form of VW club, say your a member on here. It worked for me when I needed a new sump!

I would be surprised if the cat internal's could reach the back of the car (and they are ceramic honeycomb bit's in the cat)as there's a few silencer boxes to go through first (unless it's a straight through system)..more likely the baffles (wadding I think it's called) for the back box..it would be worth taking your exhaust off and seeing if there are any blockages in the system as this won't be good for your engine

I know exactly what that is. Fibreglass from inside the silencer as boney says. I had the same happen years ago on a mini wi a cherry bomb exhaust. The whole lot came out in a stream like candyfloss lol

a CAT is filled wi a rare-metal mesh, made of neodymium an cobalt or something. I cut my scooby one open an it doesnt look like hair, it looks like a metal strainer type mesh.
