Supercharger?
« on: 24 January 2007, 10:46 »
Ok, a friend of mine has just said he heard from a vw masterfit technician (his mates dad basically) that you can fit a supercharger to the 8v 2l engin without reducing the compression first i.e. its different from a turbo....

Is this true? I didnt believe it but then im new to vdubs so maybe they are different, and I only know anything about turbos not 'chargers..

If true, i want a charger for my gti!!!!

sounds like nonsense to me....a supercharger is the exact same principal as a turbo - forced induction! another fella was asking this a couple of days ago, you need a low compression setup, and it would be cheaper sticking with the G60 or 1.8T rather than trying to SC or TB your current block!

One of my mates told me its fairly easy to supercharge a Mk3, he knows a lot about cars but is prone to bull****.

I tend to think however easy someone says something is its always way harder and more costly.

Just had a look for superchargers through google, found a supercharger kit for Mk3 golf GTI 8V from neuspeed:

http://www.neuspeed.com/products/product_details.asp?app=26|G3&type=11&ltype=ns_euro&p_id=625

American company, kit is 2500 dollars (approx £1200). Only english dealer is Awesome GTI in Manchester and I know they dont carry it as stock item so would have to order it for you.

Also, apparently dont fit easy to RHD cars plus from what I just read they get **** reviews.

Opinion, seems to be you would have to change compression ratio and check bottom end would handle the power your putting into it.

Gains would get car to 190BHP max and cost about 2K. Doesnt seem worth it for the car really.

If you want to spend that much, could put a new engine in or sell your 8V and buy a VR6 or 20VT.

General concensus for 8V is exhaust, induction, chip.

good post that patch.... nice one!

but as u said, for 2k you could easily do a vr6 conversion with a rebuilt / slightly modded and tuned engine, and see well over 200bhp!!!!

not that ive been thinking about going down that route u understand

Aye true, I would rather have a vr6 but i went for the gti cause all the vr6's were waaaaaaay down south and i wouldn't travel more than 20 or 30 miles to get a car.

Hell even the vr6 doesnt have that much power considering the displacement. But all that torque would be luvvley!

My 2l TC 16v MR2 was 173bhp standard but it was hideously impractical as a family car and god help you if anything broke cos it was a nightmare to work on. (stoopid hairdresser-mobile)

That said, I LOVE my GTi, just want more power at the lower half o the revs.

I guess i'll have to continue improving it and maybe p/x for a VR6 in the summertime (sigh).....

hasnt the vr6 engine got loads of potential for tuning tho?

im sure u can get close to 250 from them, with a very similar torque figure it would be a weapon!!!

then again, 200bhp wouldnt be shy! and from 179 to 200 isnt a huge jump.

i went for a gti cause i couldnt afford the insurance on a vr6, just waiting for some no claims, then goin to look into the conversion

aye its a vr6 for me too mmmmmmmmmm luvvly!

I've seen a few for sale and the prices vary wildly from £900 to £5000! Most are in England tho but a few in scotland too. Being 41 my insurance is piss cheap anyway (£240 fully comp for the 2l GTi w just 2yrs ncb) so im not bothered about that.

However it MUST be a 3dr cos 5dr golfs look like a london bus lol

You could always have a look on this site, see if people are selling a VR6 near to you
