92 gti sportline advice
« on: 23 January 2007, 17:49 »
Hey guys, just bought a k plate 92 gti sportline,. Im not really much of a car buff so was looking for some advice. The car itself is essentially mint inside and out but it has done 107000 miles is this sumthing i need to worry about? Also the roof is leaking in places most notably the passanger side door. The roof itself is a bit tatty so im getting a new one put on it on thursday and im paying £320, is this on ok price? Having had the new roof put on is this gona solve my leaking problem or is their somthing else i need to address. Any advice would be great    Cheers all.

yeah 320 is a gud price..just make sure they do a gud job..
note that you have to leave your hood up for a wk after gettin it fitted so check it works and is tight enough after that..
the leak cud also be coming from your door seals, so it may be worth throwing some water over various places and checking it out for yourself..
even if it isnt your hood, a new one always makes the car look ten times better

Cheers dinx, cant wait for new hood  Do you no where i can get the door seals from if i do need them, like i said in the previous post, im not a car buff at all, kinda came across the car by accident and fell in love with it. Also it has an old immobiliser on it but it has been disabled, im guessing because whoever had it has lost the key as i didnt have anything with the keys when i bought it. Can i get this immobilser working again or will i have to buy new, if so any recomendations for a good one at not too great a price.   Thanks for the advice

Hi sallycinnamon

As dinx said lets see pic's of the car. Also at the mileage of your cab, its just running in really..

Regarding leak in the hood - this info might help you. (Price is about right for ne w hood, make sure they replace the cables as well for hood, this is key..)

Have you checked the rubbers on the doors are 100% ok, as I've had water come through from them before near bottom. Also the front arch's where the body kick is someones water gets through between bodykick and main body and holds there and then rots body and leaks inside right near carpet.

If you really want to test out the roof - get hose pipe and turn on - doesn't need to be blasting and put over the front door roof area about 4 inchs from edge and go back and forth to cover the whole window length for about 1 minute and watch to see if the water is leaking into the car - usually the water comes in from the front door seal or at back of door where top rubbers from roof area are not up against each other properly - this is due to wear. - I had this on my current cab and replaced rubbers and hood all went away..

GPC provide all cab rubbers - but expensive... http://www.gpcvwaudi.com

I find the following company A1 for hoods - http://www.autohoods.co.uk/contact.htm - they will come out to you and fit new hood..

On the alarm, I would get a new one and I find TOADs are properly one of the best around these days and they are priced really well. I have a I606 Toad installed on my Mk1 cab and its excellent, even have the pager option as well, so if the alarm goes off I get paged :)

Thanks guys, will test new for leeks when i have new hood put on thursday. Just so i dont look a complete fool when a ask the guy if hes replacing the cables, What exactly are the cables and what do they do, im thinking its pretty obvious but i want to be sure. See what you mean about the seals being pricey but i have a bit to spend, managed to knock the original price down to £1500, because the girl selling was in trouble with her credit card and needed the money asap so i reackon ive saved myself a few quid their. Will try and get some pictures up soon, like i said the car is immaculte inside and out apart from some small details, needs a new starter moter, new fan belt and the blowers dont work on the heaters but im hoping thats just a fuse. Also so little git has keyed it down the drivers door  but dont think it will cost much to get that sorted. Anyhows thanks for youre advice, like i said im a comlete novice when it comes to cars so im sure il be regular visitor to this forum in future

Cheers  Sally

£1500 for a Sportline, good deal. :afro: The cables go down the sides, inside the hood and keep it tight when it's up. Imagine a little clothes line. They should become obvious when the person take your old roof off.

The cables are for holding the hood in place - have a look at this link shows you all about changing a hood and what should be replaced.

http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=12313&highlight=prowler

http://www.vwgolfmk1.info/main/Buyingacab.pdf - Guide to buying a cab - shows what to look for on hood also and covers the cables

Also this mk1 owners club/forum is great source for anyone on information who owns a mk1. http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk - there is alot of mk1 cab owners on there also including me!

Hope this helps.
