2.0 8v conversion info
« on: 18 January 2007, 16:41 »
Hi all just got my 2E engine, for my mk2 8v. Just wondering a few things. Like I haven't got power steering on my car, but the 2e lump has got all the power steering stuff on it, so what do I do??

Im gonna be using the PB gearbox, can't I use the 2E flywheel, and 8v clutch???

also the alternator bracket on 8v is different to the 2E which one do I use?? as the 2e one is held on by the power steering pump.

any advise and pics would help cheers

1. Use a complete MK2 kit, except the pump.  Run the MK2 PAS pipes to the MK3 pump :)
2. No, use the old flywheel, and a new MK2 8v vlutch, the 2e flywheel is heavier than your old one!
3. Use a 2e alternator if possible, the MK2 PAS bracketry is total rubbish, so stick with the MK3 setup if you can.

If you keep all the standard 2e bits on the bottom end, you'll need to fit the 2e front plastic coolant flange as the pipes from the waterpump etc are different.  You'll also need a 2e metal water pipe as well, and you'll have to block off the header tank overflow pipe on the rad with a short length of hose with abolt threaded in, as the 2e flange has the header tank overflow on it.

This is the end result of my 2e bottom end conversion, I tried to use as many 2e bits as possible:

Couple more bits of info:
For the PAS conversion you need:
Rack (get a 16v rack if possible, apparently they're quicker)
New track rod ends (might as well while the rack is out!)
Rack rubber mount
Pipes
Reservoir & bracket
PAS column -> rack UJ & Boot
Bracket from front of block to hold PAS pipes
Bracket on passenger chassis leg to hold PAS pipes, and protect the brake line

While you have the gearbox out, replace the oil with 2 quarts of Redline MTL, replace the release bearing & end plate, and fit a new push rod bush & seal, and a new input shaft seal.

I've got everything I need for the power steering set-up apart the UJ bit. Which is why I wasn't intending to put power steering on the car.

unless u've got uj joint u wanna sell me??

ah well if u dont want pas, take the pas pump & brackets off & leave the alt brackets on.  Seems a shame not to fit PAS while you have the chance though ;)
