Head Gasket
« on: 17 January 2007, 09:44 »
After several months of pure trouble free motoring, my car has developed an 'oil feature' in the engine bay. Looks like the head gasket has gone

Only concern for me is, the chap that I bought the car off a few months ago had said that the head gasket hadn't long been done?

Assuming he wasn't lying through his teeth, any reason why it would go within 6 months of it been done?

It's coming from the right hand side of the block, roughly where the head gasket is. Plus i'm losing oil & water. It's not emulsifying at the moment, probably because I haven't driven it since I noticed it.

could just be the rocker cover gasket leaking, and coolant leaks from the plastic flanges on the front/side of the head ;)

Well car is now in the garage. Mechanic doesn't think it's the head gasket, but I'll find out about 2ish.

Well i've got the car back. Apparently all it needed was a new oil switch. Leak has stopped, and mechanic said it doesn't appear to be losing water anymore. Odd.

Ah well, all sorted for under £25 so can't go wrong. Will keep an eye on the water levels over next few days.... not entirely convinced it's all over yet....

check out the plastic flanges on the front & side of the block, most common place for an old VW to leak :)
