 Erm . . . but your $hit kits are highly illegal, and your so called MoT is clearly not bona-fide, in terms of the testers integrity.

The UK and EU law on Xenon headlamps is perfectly clear.  They must have standard fit headlamp washers, and they must have standard fit auto-leveling headlamp beams (which are only fitted OEM when OEM Xenons are fitted).

I hope you advise all your customers, past, present and future, of the illegality of aftermarket HID lamps.  I also hope you advise them of the DfT campain regarding the unlawful fitment of these dangerous products, and that MoT testing stations have been advised by VOSA to fail those said vehicles.

i'm sure the almight Doc has said in the past that the rules regarding these bits (the washers for sure) only apply to factory fit items.

For some reason retro fit Xenons don't have to have the waskers etc??

No, that's probably because TurboRevs has been economical with the truth on an epic scale!

you didn't pull any punches Teutonic but if you are right - and I think you are - then you wrote the right response. I just hope I don't get on the wrong side of you - ever

I'm just a pussycat really

I'm actualy mega pi$$ed off by the spamming "see you next tuesday".  Look at his profile - everyone of his 12 posts have been spam.  Did he offer any constructive advice or comment to either the original poster, or the subsequent replys?  -  No, he simply tried to hijack the thread, with his blatant spamming of illegal products.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought the idea of these forums was to share ideas, technical tips, ownership ideas and experiences, problems and praises of dealers, etc, etc - and with the optional addition of light heated banter.  Above all, a two way flow of info - a bit of give and take - but ToastedBolloc&$  up there just blantantly spams.

  fx/on <rant mode over - goes for a lie down> fx/off

Nope, that's tosh.  I don't wish for the Doc to cast away his white coat  , but he may need to re-examine this difficult patient  :nerd:.

It's all to do with Type Approvals, both UK and EU.  Any car sold, and subsequently used in the UK has to comply with both Type Approvals - the main legislative framework in the UK is the Construction and Use Regulations (CUR).  Basically, certain bits on a car, to comply with the CURs have to have an appropriate "E" approval.  These include things like seat belts, tyres, and all vehicle lighting.  Both the light assembly, the luminaires (the bulbs, LEDs, HID capsules), and any other item directly relating to the lights (HID ballasts, leveling devices, even the light switch).

There is no exemption to any aftermarket device which replaces the OEM part.  If you want to retro-fix HID Xenon headlamps, then every component which required OEM "E" approval, should be replaced with "E" approved parts.  There is quite a bit of engineering to introduce two level sensors, the automatic headlamp range ECU, and the headlamp washers, as well as the proper "E" approved headlamp assembly and luminaire.  You may be lucky with the headlamp washers, because some "winter pack" options often have them, even on plain halogen lamps.

Any person who uses any motor vehicle on public roads which breaches the Construction and Use Regs does commit an offence under the Road Traffic Act, and can be prosecuted accordingly.

There has been much publicity in some of the trade only press with this specific regard to aftermarket fitment of HIDs, along with the potential penalties.  I'm only trying to make people aware of where they stand, law-wise.

when I first got my GTI back in Sept, I came on this forum and asked the The Doc about after-market Bi-Xenon's and he politely informed me of the "need" for auto leveling and headlamp washers and if my car didn't have said items, not to fit them.  Which I'm glad now I didn't.  The law is the law, it might be an ass but its there for a reason, mainly to stop people driving round with the Xenons pointing skywards and blinding us!

I was relying on my ever fading memory so apologies if I was wrong. Never could understand why retro fit would get an easier ride than standrd fit anyway.

Sorry guys!!!
