Scratches! Help!
« on: 13 January 2007, 00:35 »
Can anybody help me out here?

Just noticed that a cat has wandered all over my bonnet!

I'm absolutely devastated as have only had the GTI a matter of weeks and never ever happened on my old Pug which was parked in the exact same place for over two years! must be more desirable i suppose!

Anyway, I havent had a chance to wash and polish it up yet to see the true extent of the damage, i can see plenty of minor (i hope) claw markings and scratches, most visable under bright light.

Does anybody know of a good T-Cut or polish that will bring the scratches out without damaging the paintwork?  Or has anyone had their motor back to the dealers for a professional touch up etc and could tell me how much I would be looking at? it is only the bonnet as it's full of muddy paw prints!!

Any response would be most grateful

Cheers

Wash with car soap, then buy some Farecla G10, wet a cloth, rub it in (not circular) then give it a good solid polish and wax. Don't just do one section though, you really need to do the whole panel.

I STOPPED POLISHING MY CAR AGES AGO, ITS WHEN YOU POLISH THEM THAT YOU START SEEING / PUTTING SCRATCHES AND SWIRLS IN THE PAINT WORK  . ITS MY PERSONAL OPINION ONLY, BUT I JUST WAX MY CARS NOW, THATS WHAT I'M GOING TO BE DOING WITH MY 30th EDITION WHEN SHE LANDS . IT DEPENDS WHICH WAX YOU LIKE BUT I AM USING MEGUIARS AT THE MOMENT WITH GOOD RESULTS. THERE ARE DIFFERENT ONES, MY SON USED ZYMOL ABOUT £40 A SMALL TIN ON HIS BMW WITH EXCELLENT RESULTS. YOU NEED TO TRY A FEW AND SEE WHICH ONE YOU LIKE

G3 is made by Farecla, same as G10 - but its not a fine compound! It is used for rejuvinating old paint and its pretty abrasive, G10 is a liquid compound and its much finer, its much easier to use.

Not sure about the comment about waxing and polishing causing scratches. But as long as you use a clean fine cotton cloth, you shouldn't have any major worries.

A good polish and wax is needed after using any paint treatment (G10/T-Cut/Meg's Paint Renovator). A wax or polish won't remove scratches, just enhance them - use polish after a paint treatment!

Have a look at detailing world, and search for "two bucket method"
