well look at it this way.

mine is lowered 40mm at the back, and about 30mm at the front, she sits on 215/40/17 tyres, and 8.5" wide wheels, and ive never had any scrubbing on anything, even with 4 other people in the car.... so if i dont have a problem with that set up, then i dont think 1cm extra rubber width will cause any dramas.

the only thing that might cause a problem is the offset of the wheels, if it is really high, then a lot of the width of the wheels will sit inside the arch.... but i really dont think u will have any problems...

no worries mate glad to help...

there is always the option of getting a small spacer to push the wheels out more to make sure they clear the inside of the arch.

and remember to get some pics up when they are on

Hi Mase,

I am planning on putting new alloys on my Mark III 8v and you seem to know what you talking about. The car isnt dropped at all yet and has the standard 5 stud VW alloys.

What's the biggest alloy size you can put on without arch work - is it 17" ?

Also what is the biggest alloy width you can have 7" or up to 8" ?

What tyres can you then put on these, 215/40/17 or anything bigger ?

I am fancying some BK299s - they come in 17 x 7" which deffo will fit and 18 x 7.5" which might not.

BK sell the 7 x 17" with 205 tyres 40 17 tyres but I wanted something a bit chunkier on them like 215s. Do you have 215s on &2 alloys on yours ?

Cheers

Mark

I dont believe those tyres will clear the struts, in my opinion you will need spacers!

I run 215/40's and I am told that is the max on 17" wheels.

225/45's will also mean that your rolling radius will increase so your speedo will not run true!

haha, know wat im talking about... wouldnt go that far, still new to dubs, just transfering knowledge picked up from different fittments really....

as len has already pointed out, 215's could be the widest tyres u can fit under the arches of a mk3 without causing problems... i havent even had mine on axle stands to see wats happening with the suspension set up yet haha.

but AFAIK... with no lowering, u can get 18's under the arches... its just when u come to dropping it i think u need the inner arch trimmed and maybe rolled to clear.

now my 17's are 8.5" wide, and sit on stretched 215/40 tyres... i dont know the offset, and its lowered about 40mm, and even with 4 other people in it there isnt any scrubbing anywhere.

my theory on this is that if u can get 215/40/17 wheels and tyres under the arches with a 60mm drop, then surely u could fit 215/35/18 wheels and tyres under a 30mm or even 40mm drop with very little trouble, and at the end of the day, arch rolling usually only costs about £30 a corner, so wouldnt be a huge ammount if it turns out u needed some rolling or trimming done.

It is possible to fit 18's with 30 or 35 profile tyres without arch work and you keep the correct rolling radius.

But!

Those tyres are real "rubber bands" and will give you a very harsh ride and skittish handling. Like a lot of tramlining etc.
Looks nice but will make the car horrible to drive!

I'm on 215/40's and they are bad enough and I am seriously thinking of going down to 16's and 45 profile. If I lower/stiffen the suspension then I certainly will.
