Rear Parking Sensor Install, anyone done it?
« on: 10 January 2007, 14:10 »
Hi,

I'm new here, on day 3 of my GTi experience. I have a 07, Black with 18's, Interlargos and DSG.
A while ago I thought I saw an install diary here on retro fitting it but for the life of me I cant find it.
I think "The Doc" was involved in the thread but I cant find it.

I'm doing the ipod in the glovebox install this weekend so the parking sensors may be next if its doable.

Regards

Dave N

Yes Doc was the man. He fitted them to his wife's car but did not have time to take pics. He had offered to fit them free for someone who was close enough to travel to him and then take pics of the install for us all to learn. If you are near to him and he is still willing I would snap up that offer asap.

I dont think the getting the ferry from Ireland would make it worth my while, though a rip through Wales might be fun. I must have seen the pictures version on vwvortex.

Correct! I will fit a set for free so that I can post on here!

I can guide you via the phone / net but be patient as I dont have a "live" subject anymore!

I presume you can carry out basic wiring / drilling etc. if you can then its pretty straight forward!

Here are some pics of the finished article - the display is optional - I fit them in the lower part of the bumper because they are difficult to see, look better than in the upper and don't require painting!

Doc

What kit is that, its the one I'm looking for, if the install is a bit of drilling and wire splicing I should be able to cope. I like the sensors in the black plastic section then the sensors dont have to be colour coded.
About how long does the intall take?

Thats a sweet job doc. Is the system integrated into the car - i.e. does it come on when you engage reverse or is it seperately switched?

"What kit is that, its the one I'm looking for, "

It's a steelmate kit like this one on fleabay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Steelmate-Parking-sensors-6-eye-kit_W0QQitemZ160069917459QQihZ006QQcategoryZ75330QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Me too!

"About how long does the intall take?"

It took me about an hour - you can save time if you can get your hands into tight sapces as you wont need to remove the bumper!

Thanks, It comes on when you engage reverse gear, yes. You can install a switch if you like

And that includes the visual distance gauge which looks to be mounted into the rear view mirror?

That is a bargain of a price and may well result in a visit to god knows where up north later in the year! or I may be brave and try it....
