Droning noise
« on: 09 January 2007, 19:07 »
I've got a droning noise which starts at around about 30mph as quite a bassy tone and becomes more noticeable at higher speeds, it also has a cyclic rhthym to it. It varies with road speed (not engine speed, tried dipping the clutch and changing through the gears and the noise stays the same) and is there when I'm going in a straight line, not noticed it when turning corners but I haven't turned any at 30mph+! Any ideas what this could be? Only noticed it recently (Mon) after doing an gearbox oil change (a week and a half ago) ... could the two things be linked? Will have to check wheel bearings, but does this noise sound like a wheel bearing on the way out? Is there anything else that might make a similar noise?

Cheers

Check the gearbox differential - sounds just as you describe it.

Could be diff, but far more likely to be a wheel bearing.

Usually yes, but I was relating it to the gearbox oil mentioned. To check it, get the front wheels safely raised, go through the gears and listen - if you can still hear it with the wheels up and spinning but carrying no weight, its the diff.

Would a shot front wheel bearing make a more noticeable nooise when cornering? This noise is there when going in a straight line... hope it is a wheel bearing and not gearbox issues. Need to check the bearings..... damn the early nights and rain!
