Permanant Fitting Of TomTom
« on: 08 January 2007, 22:15 »
well i ordered my TomTom earlier and hope to get it either tomtomorrow or wednesday.

now i hate having wires coming out of the cig lighter so want to have it fitted so that the wires are 'hidden' how easy is this to do and can i get cut the end of the power cable and 'lash' it in the fuse box?

cheers

Dont see why not - probably best to install an in-line fuse. Only downside I can see is, your mounting bracket will always be on view and this is often enough to attract attention and have someone break in to your car, just in case the Tom Tom is hidden there as well. Even the suction mark on the windscreen is enough.

I did have a thought the other day about making it a permanent feature in the dash, perhaps by removing the ashtray and remoulding the centre console to suit. It would have to incorporate a cover to keep it out of site. Just a vague thought though!

I have wondered about this as well. What you really need to do is the whole job and wire in the permanent mike for the phone, power, line out to the stereo and hide the tmc thing somewhere. Still leaves you the problem of the bracket as said. Like the idea of trying to hide it in the dash but it then doesn't make it great for seeing it!!

get a nokia n73 download tomtom 6 mobile and use ure phoen cradle nobody breaks windscreens for phone cradles, the tomt tom is much much better faster and more accurate, it has a cold start time using any bluetooth gps of around 20 secs compared to the 5 mins ure tom tom takes.

also the screen is big and its so much easiet to update with cameras voices etc, plus its on ure mobile, dont need to worry about smudge marks on screen and keeping safe the big tom tom kit when u just get it on ure mobile.

Teh sound and speaker is mint and one big big plus is the battery life it lasts for about 3 times more than a standard tom tom so u have no wires anyway. i used it fo r9 hrs staright york to london and back yesterday only lost two bars was mint picked all cameras everythign also locks onto tom tom traffic nicely using ure phone gps  cant complain man if u want  tom tom mobile 6 let me know.

Yeah was thinking of the phone option. The HTC Atremis/T-mobile mda 3/O2 Orbit is an interesting bit of kit as very slim for including gps. Then again, have you seen what apple has just announced? lol. :)

well my tomtom 710 came yesterday, i've currently got a SPV M500 which will be replaced next month so thought about GPS for that but decided that the screen was too small, and the only real smart phone option would be the XDA Pro (cant rem the orange equiv).

anyways i got the cradle setup last night and have run the TMC Ariel across the screen for the time being.  The hands free mic lead you get is crazy long but i might be able to stash that behind the a pilar or just stick with my jarba hands free.  I'm going to see what the battery life is like, its meant to be 4 hours which is fine as my day to day driving is only about 1 hour.  there is a auto electricians near me, i might see if he's got any ideas as i'd like to get full closure added to the alarm too.
