Number Plate light not working

I have a problem and need advice, the number plate lights are not working on my 1987 gti MKII. I have changed the fuse even though it had not blown and change both the blubs with new ones even though they where not blown either and still no joy.

This specific fuse actually powers the glove box light too and this is working so it not fuse or fuse box cos the glove box light would not work either if the fuse or the fuse box was the problem would it?

Can someone please advise my next move thanks.

Is it possible to wire the number plate blubs to the tailgate lights and get round it this way or not.

Hi, You probably have a broken wire where the wires come out of the body, and enters
the tailgate, opening and closing the tailgate over the years takes its toll on the wire!    repair should be straight forward, pull out the rubber flexi hose, and rejoin the broken wire, solder and heat shrink insulation is the best way to go.. if not then use crimped connectors, but avoid scotch locks

So it is probably a broken wire on the tail gate some where you think. I'll have a look in the morning cheers

crimped connectors and scotch locks are methods of joining wires together, when you find your broken wire, take a trip to halfords, tell them what you need to do, ie, rejoin a broken wire, and they will sell you something to sort out your problem

connecting your rearlamps to your No plate lamps would mean running a new wire right past your broken wire!! no sense in doing that!

Open your tailgate, and either side of the hinges will be black rubber pipes, this is where the wires to the tailgate run through! your broken wire will be in one of the rubber pipes.. the left one i think.. pull out the pipe from either the tailgate or the body, and inspect the small amount of wire that you can see, the broken wire should be obvious...
