« on: 06 January 2007, 14:55 »
Right had a problem with the car stalling idleing etc, got it fixed, but still noticed car is drinking to much petrol...e.g around 25mpg 1.6s golf mk4

got the car checked 2day by a vw expert, with vag-com, no fault codes at all...

he says the timing out? but i really didnt get what he meant by that.....

and said a decent service would be good..but that might no help the fuel jus help the car run smoother,

any ideas ppl?

thankssss

How old is your 1.6s mark 4. Original is it ?  Timing is done by ECU computer, it is either working or not.  You can't adjust the timing on recent Mk 1V's, it's all electronic.

That guy is talking complete and utter b****cks. Go to VW mechanics, not necessarily a Dealer.  Probably a sensor.  I don't know the 1.6s, but timing problems ceased when distributors where made redundant - a long time ago !

its a 1998 S-reg

The guy was a vw specailist, wont put the name up..... but ok fair nuff sounds like u know ur stuff

the car is standerd engine wise, just changed a air pipe which had a crack init, but it aint no performace one, its just a orginal vw part same as the original, so engine is complety standerd

it has 18" alloys, but i didnt think that would affect it...

any ideas mate?

Also was reading about temp sensors.... and herd they cause a problem, but my temp gauge works fine, dont know if its still worth changing?

also i dont drive the car like its a F1 car lol, i think i drive normally, change gears fast...between 1800-2100 revs....

thanks

Could be as simple as changing your spark plugs and maybe putting some injector cleaner through the fuel.  Worth trying the cheap stuff first.  Re the temp sensor I believe you would have trouble trying to start it if the engine was warm, with the 1.8T there are two temp sensors, one for the ECU and one for the gauge so just because the gauge is working doesn't mean that they other one is working properly, maybe its different on a 1.6 though.  I believe the sensor is cheap and easy to replace but I would go with spark plugs / injector cleaner first.
