Bleeding help!
« on: 05 January 2007, 21:44 »
I did the bodge job and used copper piping to replace my matrix by-pass thing. After the operation i left the car running for about 15 mins and coolant started flowing out the expansion tank (lid off by the way!!) I have then felt top rad hose which is hot, bottom rad hose is warm. Heating in car now works but only warm, better than cold which it was before operation. Have i bled the system correctly....also why is the heating in car only warm? MFA reading was 106c so should be nice and hot air i would have thought

did you replace both valve with copper pipe?

when you let the coolant flow from the header you only have to let a little out then put the top on or there wont be enough in there and it will start to push air round the system which could cause poor heat through the matrix.

also massage the large pipes as the engine warms up on fast idle it will help to push any air out.
are you losing water from the system once the header is sealed?

the 106 temp also concerns me. would say your water pump is on its way out. i replaced mine because i didnt like the 102 i was getting. got one from euro car parts for 40 quid with a new stat. now it runs at 96. much better!

however be prepared to change the matrix after the pump as the new preasure behind a 16 year old matrix can split it.

hope this helps.

don't think 106 on you mfa is anything to bother about, mine regularly reads 112, heater and cooling is fine!

maybe change your thermostat?

Thank you for replies!

I let a fair bit of water come out, most prob' half a litre....is that a bit to much? I have to massage the big hoses on warm up....is this with the expansion lid off?

yeh, lid off and once no more bubbles come out top up then wait.

as soon as the water starts to rise to the top of the header, stick the lid on and bingo.

btw..... the reason your engines are runnning so high temp is because of the ware on the impeller on the pump and doesnt push the water round as fast as it did when it was new.

water boils at a lower temp when its preasurized anyway so at 106 or 112 it creates alot of preasure. a new pump gives you less preasure and more flow.

but if your happy then who im i to knock you.

The reason it boils over without a cap is because the system isn't pressurised, nothing to do with the pump :)

The way I bleed the system is to run engine from cold with the cap off, squeeze every pipe I can lay my hands on and every now & again rev the car to 2k to really get the coolant flowing.  Keep the coolant topped up to max, then when the pipes get too hot to touch or the coolant overboils switch off the car, top the coolant up and refit the cap.

Even after this, sometimes I have to take the car out for a rag to get the heaters proper hot :)

Did you have the heaters on full hot and all vents open when you bled it?

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

doesnt matter on a MK2, coolant always flows thru the heater matrix.
On the MK1 based cars you must set the heaters to hot because it has a valve that blocks off coolant flow to the matrix.
