19" to 18/17" wheels?

purchased a 1.8T a couple of months ago with 19" wheels (235/35 tyres) and the ride is shocking to say the least.  thing is i can't decide whether to go for 18" wheels with 225/40 or 17's with 215/40or45 tyres.  will i notice much difference in ride comfort by going from the 19's to the 18's?

i put 18s on my golf with 225/40 tyres and the ride was fine but my suspension was standard

has your car been lowered at all cause that will make the ride really harsh combined with the 19" wheels
