Problems with a TDI 115 PD

Hi,
Recently bought a Mk4 1.9 Tdi estate and have a couple of questions you might be able to help me out with.

1, when its cold its difficult to start. Its had a new relay and glow plugs but is still difficult to start.

2, when accelerating in 5th and 6th from around 1500 rpm to 2000rpm, there is a drone/rumble coming from possibly the front, does not happen in other gears or at higher rpm under load.

3, how easy or expensive is it to change the door hinge pins as the door has a bit of up and down play.

Lastly, the fuel economy is poor at 42 average.

I'm wondering if your timing is slightly out. That can cause poor starting and reduced MPG

When I turn on the ignition the heater (coil) light is only on for one, two seconds max even on a freezing day. I do tend to wait say 5 - 10 seconds before cranking the engine. is this correct or not.

I don`t think i`ve ever waited for mine to go off, I think its only on for a split second anyway and starts first time regardless of the weather

My glow plug light only comes on for about 2 seconds - the handbook says you only need to wait for the light to go out when air temp is below 5°.

Very different to my Discovery where the glowplug light is on for at least 10 seconds. Although I sometimes forget and just turn the key right to start and it always does without any problem.

I'm sure I've read somewhere that not waiting for the glowplug light to go out can cause some damage over the long term.  Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Probably not ideal as you may have a cylinder with not enough heat to cause combustion - that unburnt fuel will then get washed down the bore and some dumped out through the exhaust and turbo.
