Symbol on the dash display

Hey Everyone
                      a quick question.. I am a new VW Golf Mk 4 owner, 1st Golf owned (virgin) I just bought the little beauty last week (thursday) 2nd Hand but it didn't come with a User Manual as the previous owner had lost it, does anyone know of a good location to download an Online manual (if one should exist). I intend to buy a new one from my nearest VW dealership at the earliest oppurtunity. In the meantime I need to check a warning symbol that has appeared on my dash display ... it is a picture of an engine with a lightning bolt symbol through it with the word check undernaeth, can any of you advise me on what this is ?

Just checked my manual, and according to that if the symbol is blinking then it means there is the potential for the catalytic converter to be damaged due to misfires.  If the light is steady then the quality of the exhaust gases have (or appears to have) deterioated
Either way, get it looked at!

welcome to the forum!!! i havent got a manual wirth mine either!!! >:( hope your prob aint too serious!! and if you find out where/how much a manual is let us know!! ;D

The light is constant  :'( so it looks like a trip to my nearest dealership so they can plug in their lappytops then !! Thanks for the info Nimrod.
  Just got a quote from my nearest dealer for the Manual and he reckons 24GBP + P&P, :o    ... booked the car in for a check up also so I will keep you posted on the Warning Light.
  Going through some old forum mails and there is some great advise on here, I think I will be a regular ....keep up the good info !

If you are after a new booklet, try e-bay, i saw some on there for a golf a month ago and some guy was selling them for ?15.  

In fact here you go, just checked and there is loads on thee now, check these 2 out
